You should be fine with this then, it's a router of sorts, one LAN port, two phone ports, built in wifi. According to the manual it is possible to connect it to another router to get more lan ports, I'm waiting to get my Belkin to try it out. As far as Steam goes you shouldn't have any problem, that is if yours performs as good as this setup does, I was hitting 9mbs last night dowloading Football Manager 2010, never dropped below 3mbs, averaged about 6.

Google the device - Motorola CPEi 775 Series - you'll find the user manual in pdf format as one of the top results....

Thanks to users sharing their speeds/experiences. Helps us all make an informed choice.

Could you please detail the service you're using, however. Is a mobile dongle, indoor box, outdoor/mounted antenna, etc.?

    Thanks again

Getting this in next week. 7 day trial is not 7 day trial, it is cooling off period and starts when you order not when it is installed.

Getting fixed service, will post back when I get it.

    Well folks,

Got the Wimax external antenna today. Haven't been home to test it yet but the engineer has left me passwords for the router etc. Will post later and let yis know how good/bad it is. Although when I ordered the package I understood that it was a 7 day trial from when it was installed. Bit I'll keep it in mind that it's not.

We have wimax imagine external aerial for the last couple of days. 7M Maynooth. It seems to be working fine as we test it.

One this to note: They do have to drill a hole in the wall to attach to the internal router and that router has to be near a plug and also near an internal phone line for when you swap your landline over.

However, when I try and test the line speed and ping and all that good stuff, different sites give wildly different numbers. Ranging from 1.7M download to 61M one after the other. I tried using speedtest.net, irishisptest and speedtest.imagine.net. Why would that happen?

I got my antenna fitted friday. Not getting anywhere near 7mb. However the fact that they sell it as up to 7mb screws it up. I have been running tests on sppedtest.net and they vary differently. The most I have ever gotten is 4mb/sec. I will post some of the results when I go home. This is my last day to cancel the order. When I am getting 4mb Im happy enough to be paying the 35 a month. But it's way to inconsistent.

Different speed test, different location, different speed.

can you go to pingtest.net and select Dublin and post the results?

That doesn't seem right to me. I can't be losing 97% packets and not noticing?

Then on speedtest.net, dublin server, 2 minutes later

Looks like its just very inconsistent. Don't know how packet loss would go that high. What part of Maynooth are you in? I think your getting service from Leixlip.

They said it comes from Maynooth Business park which I think is the rough direction it's pointing.

Are the speed testing sites accurate. Im not sure it's coming from the business campus either. When I do a test I get 4 mb at most. But it's very inconsistent. Im happy torrent downloading though. Am getting a max of 400kb/s off some of them. Ping tests tend to range between 80 to 140. I rang imagine and one of their techs told me that speeds will improve further over the next month as theres a lot of work happening in maynooth. Happy enough with it though. 35 euro even if I am only getting 4 or 5 meg is good. Compare it to eircom.

The tech in Imagine also told me that Maynooth are getting it from Leixlip at the moment. Antenna is pointing towards the business campus though. They may be planning to erect an antenna here hopefully. They could have been what he was getting at when he said things will speed up over the next month.

    I wouldn't trust the results from pingtest.net
They're inconsistent even on a 100mbit fibre connection...

Try pinging www.boards.ie with CMD. That will give an average time.

Start > Run > Type "CMD" Without quotes> Then type "ping www.boards.ie" Without quotes > Hit enter

It isn't on their website yet anyway. It would make me happy as I'm on that side of town and getting it this week.

Start > Run > Type "CMD" Without quotes> Then type "ping www.boards.ie" Without quotes > Hit enter

If you put -t on the end, it will continue until you press ctrl-c for those interested.

Otherwise it just does 5 which can be not enough at times.

    ping boards.ie

    packets sent: 4 received 4
    roud trip
    min 52ms max 86 average 72

    packets sent 21 received 21
    min 65ms max 85 average 75

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,007 ✭✭✭✭thebman

    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 14ms, Maximum = 23ms, Average = 17ms

digiweb metro for comparison (also fixed wireless)

correct me if i am wrong but wimax is usually slower in ping times than line of sight Fixed wireless because of the way it works.

I have WiMax from a different provider and from what I understand the signal doesnt go straight from the sender to receiver on a straight line but the signal bounces off buildings, trees etc and thus the ping time is longer just by design.

I remember that I had a signal when the installer tilted my antenna 90 degrees from the sender mast meaning there was no line of sight at all but I still got a decent signal bc. as I said the signal bounced of buildings and still reached my antenna. You could probably turn the antenna 180degrees although not recommended ofcourse and probably still get a weak signal with a larger ping time penalty.

Thats why WiMax is great for ppl that dont have line of sight to the mast bc it still works. If you want the lowest pings possible go with a line of sight system.

If I misunderstand the way WiMax works please correct me.

    Thanks

There are two Wimax versions out there , Fixed Wimax and Mobile Wimax.

The new variant from Imagine is 'Fixed' Mobile Wimax. Mobile Wimax will always have crappish pings because the base station is configured to track a device that is not in the same place all the time. Not as bad as 3G generally though.

The only Fixed Wimax I know of in Ireland is the Westnet service in Mayo. That has 3mbit @ 2-3km ADSL like pings as you can see here

Well I am on WiMax with Fastcom in Sligo which they rarely use or may not even use anymore except the ones they installed already. Usually their system is line of sight but they introduced the wimax for people that were either too far away from the Mast or didn't have line of sight. Its fixed WiMax btw.

My pings to boards.ie are almost exactly as was stated with the Imagine WiMax which is around 70ms which isn't fast for sure. People that use the line of sight version on Fastcom have much faster ping times.

I don't really do online gaming so I dont care otherwise 70ms for gaming is just too high.

P.S. I guess it also matters somewhat where you are pinging boards.ie from. If boards.ie is hosted in dublin (no idea) and I ping from Sligo it should take longer than someone does a ping from Dublin. Not sure how big the difference would be because Ireland isn't the biggest country

The Dublin Sligo element accounts for 3-5ms. Technology and implementation account for the rest. As you said you have no line of sight and therefore the base station has to assemble signal fragments.

Mobile Wimax operates on the same basis.

no internet or phone this morning. on hold to imagine now for 10 minutes already and counting. Not impressed. Luckily still have old broadband still connected.

Last night saw intermittant slowdowns and huge packet losses

I am also on the side of Maynooth. As far as I know it's not in the business park yet. I'm about 1km away from it and would be a bit dissapointed with the speed of the 7mb package if it was coming for the business pk. Their tech help told me to watch it over the next month as it should get a lot quicker when they have all the gear installed in Maynooth. I have had it since friday and am happy enough with it. I know that torrents aren't accurate speed because of seeders etc but I got 700mb frog and princess down in 50 mins last night. Other films with relatively low seeds are taking maybe 90 mins. Happy with the service I am getting for 35 a month.

Imagine in Maynooth Business park is back up. hardward issues with switches apparently. This fix should also fix problems we had last night with dramatic variations in speed and packet loss.

I also finetuned my TCP/IP parameters in the Windows Registry using http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php which has made my speeds look much quicker and more like the speeds seen on the other laptop in the house.

I didn't really notice anything last night to be honest. What time did it go down at? As i say downloaded a torrent between about 7:30 to 8:30 and it flew.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43 emergingwriter

It wasn't down, just iffy. Download speed varied a lot. We noticed it about 8pm or so onwards.

Are you happy enough with the servce so far?

Too early to tell yet. The customer service hanging on the line for 10 minutes was not impressive

got this installed at lunch, quick speedtests reveal 70ms pings to boards. About 100ms to London pingtest.net server.

100ms to Rotterdam and 120ms to Oslo on pingtest.net.

Speedtest 7-8 down, can't remember up but it was about right or a little less.
