/mines coming this friday, wexford town, will report over the first few days! Better be bloody good!

When the guy rang to offer me the opportunity to order I was quick to find out what my latency would be around. I told him I'd previously been told by Imagine that it would be in and around 130ms, I wanted to make sure that was assured from sales rep. The reply was "Oh no, it'll be around 160ms, but I play online with PS3 and Xbox Live and I've no issues!". I told him that couldn't be right, lag would have to be a problem of sorts at 160ms. He asked what ping I'd be happy with. I thought I would be fair so I told him 100ms or less. "Hold on, just going to talk to one of the technicians"........."Great news, your ping will be 100ms."

Am I right in calling bull****e?

Sounds like they'll say anything to get a you into a 12 month contract.

I reckon so, what part of Wexford town you in? The Imagine mast is located on the telecoms building by Tesco, how far are you away from this and are there obstructions in the way, buildings and the like?

I'm close to Tesco, very close, Tesco is between me and the mast and there's another building in the way too, I don't have a clear line of sight but when I had the Ripwave unit upstairs it was pretty good, I'm hoping that this will perform reasonably well given the location.

Yep, they surely will say whatever it takes to get the bank details! Luckily for me I've got an account with nothing in it, if I'm not happy with the product and decide to cancel it during the cooling off period they won't be able to charge anyhow! Well, they will be able to charge but it'll be refused by bank!

True though that is good if you get it in writing :D

If they won't put in writing to you, ask them why :P

They already have suitable for Xbox and Playstation on their advertising. If it isn't up to the job, ring and cancel at any time stating that the advertising was misleading.

Ping times aren't mentioned in their terms of service and half of the terms of service wouldn't be valid if you took them to court or they took you to court which is unlikely to happen.

They will put up a fight if you ring to cancel I imagine but if you reason with them that you bought it for a purpose that they advertised that it was suitable for and it isn't, then they will likely be less likely to insist you keep paying up. Most important thing is if you are arguing it isn't usable, stop using it first! You can't argue that the service isn't good enough for you and continue using it. That is called taking the p*ss.

If they do, hang up and ring back until you get a human being or demand to speak to a manager. Tell the manager your reasons why the service isn't good enough and tell him its doing neither of you any good having the argument because your going to the bank afterwards to cancel payments as it just isn't good enough and them continuing to hassle will result in no money for them and many arguments.

At the end of the day all they care about is money and they are unlikely to take anyone to court given the cost and likelihood of them actually winning if you have a legitimate issue with the service and they also don't want somebody they don't want to ring up hassling people they know won't pay them as it costs staff hours.

heres the ping im getting with mine.

    Ping statistics for 89.234.66.107:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 42ms, Maximum = 88ms, Average = 69ms

it's been working fine online for me with the ps3. no lag or disconnects. was constantly getting lagged on eircom.

    Sorry guys, alittle off-topic.

Was thinking of opting for Wimax with imagine. I presently use o2 7.2m mobile broadband.

I notice there is a site in leixlip about to go live, can i opt for this hub and take it with me and use it in dublin city or do i need to purchase this additional dongle and pay another 15euro per month?

Well if the hub isn't connected to anything you would probably be able to bring it but you'd need to contact imagine to confirm. The hub would be quite large and require power though.

You'd be better off getting the hub and the dongle I imagine since the charge would only apply if you used it really.

Again though don't take my word for it, email them to make sure.

And don't forget to use their 'mobile' service you have to be within a couple of kilometres of one of their base station!!! Not very mobile if you ask me

I've emailed them with a number of questions about the service including availability of fixed wireless service, suitability for gaming and if a stable max ping of 100ms could be expected.

I've also asked them do they block ports and asked if they could tell me what the actual download limit of the fair usage policy is.

I will post the reply here if I get one and it contains anything useful.

i asked what the fair use policy limit grey area limit is over the phone and was told 60GB which i was shocked with. I wouldn't consider than remotely "unlimited".

    Hi all,

    I just read this:
    http://www.siliconrepublic.com/news/article/15202/comms/leixlip-receives-new-high-speed-broadband-network
(was posted on their Facebook page)

I live only a 10 minute walk from the Intel plant here in Leixlip, so I should have no trouble getting a full speed off them during most hours of the day correct?

I was originally planning to get UPC but the head of the house is very abrasive about them because of a dissapointing experience in the past so that looks like a no-go

I don't know anyone in Leixlip on Imagine so I suppose I would be the Guinea Pig :P

The technology does seem very impressive though from what I've seen, but Irish companies rarely grasp the benefits of these technologies to give the consumer a fair/quality service.

Is anybody using this wimax in the clonsilla area. Am interested but dont want to get a service that sucks either. Paying 3mb with perlico but they had to reduce the speed down to just over 1mb because of the line.

Silicon republic are basically a press release service. you'd expect them to review it if they were a proper media site. I'm planning on getting it in Maynooth so please let me know how you get on.

I wouldn't be impressed by the technology too much. They are all the same if the business oversubscribes them :(

Crap Irish BB companies and poor regulation has left Irish consumers in a position where we are afraid to sign up to a new service

Its like buying a used car except it has a 12 month minimum contract length. At least if the car was crap I could get rid of it straight away.

Yup of course, it should be within the next two weeks if I do end up getting it.

Yeah that's all very true, no politician seems too concerned about the regulation either, even though we basically get robbed when it comes to broadband compared with the likes of other European nations such as Sweden!

I live in Clonsilla. The service I had was absolutely crap!!

I live around 800metres from the base station (On top of the big Lifestyle Sports store beside Smyths in the centre AFAIK). My sister also had the service and the service was crap for her also.

Go back to page 36, from where I started posting feedback for the service.

Does the introduction of WiMax mean that any existing Irish Broadband customers will be forced to "upgrade" to Imagine's WiMax? Because as I'm sure you all know Imagine took over Irish Broadband not too long ago.

I am on the Breeze 4mb package, has been working great for a year. Is it just a matter of time until I'm told they'll be arriving at my door (in Galway County) to fit in a new hub for WiMax??

Thanks for letting us know - I will cancel the order today!

The charge was 40 euro for 7meg hub and 7meg dongle - don't know why I was getting the hub, i only have a laptop!

Will re-instate my O2 mobile connection for the time being!

dont cancel it down to the views of 1 person. i have it in since november and iv never had an issue. my speeds are always perfect. you can always try it for a week then cancel if your not happy. might as well. i know a good few people who have it at this stage and none of them are complaining.

Can anyone confirm though that you can't have access to all your settings on this Motorola router/hub such as the NAT as you would with others on DSL lines? Heard this mentioned.

I still have some big concerns about having non-DSL connection etc. Would be nice to have them settled before being tied to a 12 month contract.

    Edit:

haha, three Imagine jeeps showed up in my estate just there, the rep called in too so had a word with him.

Was a nice fella but don't think he really knew any in depth detail about the service, just the basics (5 minute training course!). I asked him was the mast located just up the road at Intel and he had to think about it, then just agreed :p. He assured me the speeds would be fast but the only way to know is to demo it.

The good point he made was about the contention being lower than Eircom but I already knew that and besides they are relatively new so should be expected to have decent contention. Apparently there's a load of them driving around.

Guess they have better things to do than answer my questions as no reply in two days.

Maybe asking them to reply and tell me what the fair usage policy is and what the max contention is was asking a bit too much it seems.

Guess they don't want that information in the publics hands but its impossible to sign up for the service without knowing this basic information.

Hopefully it'll stay like this for the week.

Are they blocking the ports? Do I have to use ports tunneling or shall I ring them and ask to unblock the port?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭Hammer of Thor

You should be allowed access to the device, I'll be ringing the guy who installed it on Monday to get password and I'll be damned if I'm not going to get it! As far as the ports go I haven't had an issue yet, xbox is working fine with it, no problems getting into friends games rooms with it, something with which I had a lot of trouble with 3.

What program are you trying to use that needs a port open?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 DublineqPL

I'm trying to run utorrent... Everything was working perfectly with my previous isp(digiweb) and i was getting always constant max speeds.
Now, as I'm trying to download something, it says that the port is blocked and speeds are 1-10kb. Sometimes it jumps to full speed(600kb) but after a min it drops again...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 104 ✭✭Hammer of Thor

I got kinda lucky with my port for bittorrent, the xbox opened up one automatically, I was able to stick that into bittorrent and away I went. Not ideal speeds, the same thing thats happening to you is happening to me, it'll do til I get access to the device to open up my own ports. Try the same is my only suggestion, hound them for the password.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 DublineqPL

    will try, cheers

Actually I've just been fiddling with it, I reset the device using the reset button on back of unit. I was worried it might clear all the preset Imagine network info, which I wouldn't have a clue about....

Went for it anyways, took awhile for the device to spring back to life, typed http://mywimax. into the browser address bar, entered the default password (motorola), and was straight into the setup wizard. Changed my password but everything else relevant to accessing the network was still entered, saved the wizard and I was onto the home page.

Looking at opening up ports now, its not as easy to use as previous routers I've dealt with but its definitely possible to do. Be warned tho if anyone is gonna do this who never has before, you'll have to setup a bit of stuff again, Wi-Fi included. Be sure you need to do it is all I'm sayin.....

Does the device have a built in router or can I plug my own ethernet router in?

Reason I ask is I don't want to use their router :D I emailed them and asked and their reply is below :P

I'm guessing their info team doesn't know what an ethernet port is :D I don't even want to run torrents on mine but I don't want ports blocked. I don't have any shows/movies I download because I go to cinema to see movies I want and tv is crap these days. All I want is to legitimately download my games from steam and play them on my PC which no wireless ISP in Ireland seems competent enough to provide :(
