Tara Clarke would definitely get it. And "it" is not my vote.

Fair play to Cait for coming on and defending herself. I still think her manifesto points are poorly thought out. The shuttles, how exactly will that work? Will it be cost effective?

I'm a big fan of 'points for trying'. On one hand, you never know. It might work.

On the other hand, you never know...

Is it common for a first year to run for a part-time position?

Either way, good luck Louise! We haven't seen you around here lately, but you're doing Gorey proud. ;)

Thanks funky penguin! Sorry I haven't been back on in a while but I've been mad hectic with stuff!

duddy give it a god damn rest, almost every candidate running has political affiliation (Aengus = president of labour, tara clarke = president of young greens, ect) and there's more to a person that the party they vote for. If members of the Fianna Fail committee want to contest the elections, they're more than entitled to, in fact, it shows they've got balls to stand up even though their political persuasions will inevitably make them unpopular and cause them issues that none of the other candidates will have to face. If you have an issue with members of FF running for election, then you should have ran yourself! don't complain about something when you're unwilling to put your own neck on the line.

All i say is good luck to them.

    Photoshop. ;)

In Cardiff every election candidate was given around a half hour with a design student(paid by the SU) who designed a poster and a leaflet for you on the computer(with your directions) and then the SU printed everyone a couple of hundred of each (for free)...

This is an amazing idea, in other colleges, everyone pays €50 and the SU do all their campaign information. It would definitely streamline work for the returning officer, and god knows i definitely know what a hard time elections are for her, but, from experience, i don't think the SU would go for it. *le sigh*

    Hey guys!

Sorry I have been neglecting you all recently... But I promise I'm back!

First of all, here you go: http://www.facebook.com/pages/NUI-Maynooth/Vote-Louise-Feaheny-for-Entertainments-Officer-2010-11/307772817622?ref=ts

Secondly, I want to thank all of you who supported me in the run-up to the First Year elections. I really appreciate it! I had a fantastic time on the exec and I don't plan on leaving if I can help it!

For those of you who don't know me, my name is Louise Feaheny and I'm running for the Entertainment Officer for the SU in next week's elections.

My entire campaign is based on one message- I'm bringing the SU back to you- so a Vote for Lou is a Vote for YOU! (You may have seen my t-shirt or posters:) )

Basically, I'm fed up of not having an opportunity for students to suggest who they want to see in the college. On Monday night I was approached by a student who asked me if elected would I look into getting Hardy Bucks into the college. That night as soon as I got back to my apartment, I emailed the group who forwarded me their manager's email address. I emailed her and got a reply from her with their cost, and a little bit of info about them. I then forwarded it straight to Shea and it's now in his hands.

From the moment I was asked until I contacted Shea was less than 36 hours. Just imagine what I could do if I was actually on the Entertainment committee!
This year I also approached Shea with a highly reduced price offer from the international male strip-show, 'The Chain Gang.' These guys are a bit like the Chippendales but better! I know the manager, the DJ and all of the guys in the group and so, they offered a great reduced deal for the college. After trying to fob me off for ages, Shea eventually ignored the suggestion and refused to get back to me on it.
If I am elected as Ents Officer, I will have a say in the acts that perform and will do my best to choose acts that appeal to different tastes. I have mingled with a huge number of social music groups, ranging from death metal heads, to hippies so I appreciate every type of music!
Maynooth has a huge amount of talent also, with one of the local bands currently nominated for "Most Promising New Artist" in the Meteor awards- Jody Has a Hitlist. I plan on harnessing the power of our local talent and putting it to good use in the SU.

I want to bring Monday nights back to the SU. No other bar in town offers the same drink promotions that the SU does on a Monday. The only disadvantage is the lack of entertainment on the same night. I plan to bring Monday nights back to students and the SU bar.

As I have spent the last few months as the First Year Representative for the SU, I know how the exec runs and I feel this would be hugely beneficial to the student population, as I can get to work on the important stuff right away, meaning that less time has to be wasted learning the ropes.

I want to bring more bar ex's, especially affordable ones, and will seek sponsorship in order to reduce the cost for both the SU and the students.

I want to set up a website specific to the runnings of the SU bar and the events that take place there. There is no point in having events hidden away in a corner of a Facebook page that no one can locate. I will also work more with the VP Comms and Dev in order to ensure that each month's events are clearly displayed in The Print. I aim to have more student reviews of nights out and hopefully we can use this to work on our weak points.

We need more fancy dress! The themed bar ex's always sell out faster than the ordinary ones, so why not give the people what they want! Nuff said!

I am not going to promise you that I will reinstate RAG week or even pretend that it is possible. The Gardai refuse to grant licenses to anything that involves the letters R, A, or G. That is why Raise and Give week also had to lost the name. What I do promise is that I will work to make sure that Charity Week owns RAG Week's ass! (Excuse the profanity- If anybody is offended by that remark please contact me and I will change it to heiny... Although that just hasn't got the same ring to it!)

I will use my time on the exec to ensure that al students are catered for- not just campus residents, not just commuters, not just undergrads and not just postgrads. We are all students and we are all here to be represented! I want more day-time activities and more events that happen earlier, and not after 9 o' clock at night.

I have a huge amount of experience in organising campaigns and charity events. Last September, some of you may remember I posted a message on Boards asking for your help for a charity night that I was hosting in order to raise money for the New Dawn charity and The Little Princess Trust. (New Dawn helps with depression and suicide prevention in Ireland, and also runs an orphanage in Sri Lanka. The Little Princess Trust is a UK based organisation that makes wigs for children with cancer.) I had my hair all chopped off and had a few of the lads waxed for the cause. I organised the entire night by myself and raised over €4000 for the charity- not bad considering it was a once-off in a small pub! I also offered excellent media coverage to two local bands who offered their services that night. Afterwards, I was contacted by the bar manager who told me that the night was one of the most successful nights that they had in a long time, and to thank us he made a donation to the charity. Anyone who doubts this can contact me and I can provide a statement from him. He will vouch that I know how to pull a crowd!

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055669808

I also have experience with helping the SU in a number of campaigns.

I have been very active in the charity side of the SU, helping with bake sales etc.

I am a member of the Media Studies and Drama Society and would like to see these and other clubs and societies more involved in the entertainment of the SU. As I said before, why not use the resources that we have. There is so much talent in the college and I want to use it.

I have a lot of experience dealing with print media, having worked with both the South East Times and Holistic Health magazine, and have learned what works in grabbing people's attention with regards to advertising and spreading the word.

I have jelly wrestled for your votes (and won against a rugby player!) I have covered myself from head to toe in luminous paint for them. I have made a complete and utter tit of myself for your votes, AND I CAN'T WAIT TO DO IT AGAIN!

I am not going to promise you what I can't. I am not going to promise you transport that will take you to your front door. I am not going to promise a Spice Girls Reunion (although that would be pretty awesome!) I am not going to promise you that I will transform the SU into something that it cannot be-

But I do promise that if I am elected I will work my heiny off in order to help you make the best of your days here in NUI Maynooth!
I'm Bringing the SU Back to You- So a Vote for LOU is a Vote for YOU!!!

*also, I do not feel that I need to resort to public nudity in order to win a few votes... But if push comes to shove...*

Irish_goat got hustings spot on there me thinks, imo Aengus was lightyears ahead of everyone.

The "Young Greens are not the Greens" answer is a funny one. I suppose Ógra Shinn Féin, Ógra Fianna Fail and Labour Youth have nothing to do with the big boys who pay for their University branch banners either.

Still, she came off by and large very well (Which means a lot coming from me, I'm allergic to the Greens) but one couldn't really disagree with the assesment she that "... perhaps didn't focus on enough issues beyond the environment"

Gavin and Aengus, pick yer horses now.

A friend of mine ran for President in UCD last year, paid a deposit and it seemed all candidates got the same amount of tshirts/posters (one design) and leaflets (two sizes)

Is this a U.S.I thing? I spend some time looking around today but anything involoving U.S.I and elections seems to lead to their own national elections.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12 O Falluin

yeah, i was stalling around campus today looking at all the election posters. You? Then i just stalled back to palmerstown yeah.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 24 circa1990

Aengus NEEDS to be SU president next year, he's by far the best candidate. We need someone who's strong and decisive to guide us through the next year and personally, I think he's the only candidate who can deliver on that. He's definitely got my 1st preference!

Anybody else noticed the level of nakedness and general booby-ness of peoples campaigns this year? I dunno what I make of it tbh, like if you think that that's the only way you can win votes is it really appropriate that you sit on the exec?

She's wearing a t-shirt. And to be honest, I see nothing overtly sexual about her poster. Girls have breasts. Get over it.

If a female candidate did campaign purely on her looks or her assets and got elected, it says more about the voters to be honest.

woeful. Mods, earn your fcuking stripes there please.

    Rob, fantastic effort there.

I confirmed my office hours the first week I was elected as rep. It is not my responsibility to ensure that they are in The Print, although I have informed the editor of them. I am in the office every Tuesday from 11-2. It is not stated in the Constitution that I am required to have office hours, but I still attend them. I am also around the offices on a daily basis, to check if any student has made an appointment with me or has been looking for me.

Below is my job description as outlined in the Constitution:

    11.9 FIRST YEAR REPRESENTATIVE
    (a) Shall be a first year student.
    (b) Shall liaise with the Executive on matters concerning first years.
    (c) Shall have no voting rights at Executive meetings.

Apart from that, my only other responsibilities are to attend any Welfare committee meetings, and also the Education committee meetings. I have missed only one executive meeting, even though my place there is a non-voting one ( I had been sent home from college due to swine flu), and I have attended every Union Council, despite being late for a tutorial every day of UC as a result of the time that it is on.

I have assisted in every campaign that the Union has run, I have assisted at bake sales, I have helped with editing The Print, and have been at every single bar ex and event that the SU has run. I have also contributed ideas and suggestions that were brought to me by other students, not just first years.
For example, on Monday night, when I was asking for votes, I was approached by someone who suggested getting the Hardy Bucks into the college. Within 36 hours I had emailed them, emailed their manager, got prices, and forwarded them to Shea, who has the final decision. I will be following this up though.

If there is anything you would like to ask me about, give me a shout on firstyear@nuimsu.com

    L x

*and I'm fully clothed in a t-shirt and jeans???*
