Ha hanging off the wall was what I was doing alright, I use one of those lidl watches where you put your finger on the pad to get your pulse (although I only really use it for time keeping). First time I have ever saw my heart rate in the 150's. Its always low in the water. I think I might try that decreasing time trick. I mustnt have realised that I dont really go all out when i do those sets.

Today was a bit better, 4 mile run at lunch, HR behaved itself nice and low, very easy run 4 miles in 37.30 HR average 122. In contrast yesterdays was 9 miles average HR was 153, with me running practically the last 20 minutes well over 200 all the way, max was 225, I have got to assume that is wrong I wasnt suffering that much during it.

    Anyways Littlebug beat that!

Turbo training this evening, found this hard, 3 x 9 minutes race pace at over 100 cadence. Looking down at my gears I was in a much easier gear than usual doing this but I was fighting hard to keep it over 100 all through. Avg HR = 130 Max = 161

Rest day tomorrow but I will sneak an easy 1000m swim during lunch with the pull buoy, more going in for the shave than anything else!

The other possible reason for the dramatic change in times could also have been you were spinning your arms in an attempt to make the times and loosing your feel / catch in the water and not pull the stroke all the way through. Of course Im guessing here since I have no idea of your stroke but the difference in 100's times is probably that rather than your fitness since you've been logging regular distances across all disciplines.

    Anyhow - just a thought

Same old story hanging off the pool wall white as a sheet again but this time the pace sessions were over so thanks for that advice Interested. Was supposed to take it easy today but forgot the pull bouy and the razor so did a quick 1000m instead.

    Did 200m warm up
    6*100 pace off 2.15......1.54/1.53/1.53/1.51/1.48/1.45
    200m warm down

Was very happy with the warm down, swam it lazy and relaxed, slow turning lengths and was astounded to see I swam it in 4.04. I know there is a lesson to be learnt there somewhere

A worrying developement today, had to stop after 1.5 miles of a 9 mile run with Mrs C due to calve tightening up. Felt a sharp pain early on and stopped up, thought i would run it off, it was fine for another mile and I could feel it starting to tighten up again. Called a halt and walked back home. (I am still going to clock that as 5k on the challenge though ;)) Stuck a bit of frozen meat on it and am trying to massage it a bit as well.

I hope everything is ok, have a 12 miler tomorrow, will see how it is tomorrow morning. After that due to work I am not running again till wednesday.

I suppose it could be worse it has happened on a recovery week

hmmm ... Ive had calve problems alot in the past - imho you need to weigh up the risk v reward of your 12 mile run tomorrow.

Had a long think about it today, what tipped me over the edge was the prospects of 2 hours up on the turbo or a run on a lovely day. Stretched a lot last night and the leg felt fine so i went for the run.

Ended up with no problems, ran very cautiously though all the same, 12 miles in 2.02, AHR = 128. No run till wednesday due to work so I felt I needed this after missing yesterdays.

Just signed up for Joey Hannon so it is good to finally have one on the table

Glad the run went well. Was that you that passed by my gaff with a blue jacket on yesterday?

I don't see an IM or HIM listed on your events int he other thread. What gives? :D

Ha yes it was, Aldis finest, so thats where you live. Was it a chariots of Fire moment for you going by the window as I was running so slow. Its a nicer run that side of the block, no angry dogs your side. I must find out your house so I can leave some weights before it, pick them up and start pumping them & speed up as I am going by it.

There is, Swinford is a half ironman

Apologies, I forgot that Swinford was a HIM.

My gaff is after the bridge on the left. I was outside with my head under the bonnet of a car.

BTW, if you're looking for hills near us I found one. Castle Hackett hill is a 2.1 mile loop and it's a killer trail run. We cycled there on Saturday, ran 2 laps and cycled back. It's the closest I've come to walking on a run. The first uphill portion is damn tough!

Pgibbo that's knockma isn't it? I try to go over there once a week. you're not wrong about that first section! I've never managed it without some walking and I haven't been brave enough to go for a second loop yet. Downhill is mighty though, usually run with a grin :D

That's the one littlebug. For the first lap we went left and up the steep bit. We did the second lap in the opposite direction. I definitely thought the first lap was much tougher. The downhill is class alright. Hard not to smile doing it!

Planning to try and get over there every few weeks for a run. The lads were doing 5 laps in 55mins last year before GaelForce. There's my target. :D

Vague recollections of seeing someone working on a car........ was it a Peugeot???

Will have a look at that hill, it is a bit flat around our place.

I faded badly on the final hill in Achill HM last year so I dont want to be caught like that again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭pgibbo

That's the one! There's an alarm on the house so leave your cat burglar outfit where it is! :D

If you park the car at the Belclare GAA pitches, do 2 laps of the pitches, run to the hill and do 2 laps of the hill then back to the pitches it's around 16k or 18k from what I have been told.

Looks like w'll be cycling over again this coming Saturday, running the hill twice and off on the bikes again. Plan for 70-80k on the bike and 7k run. Then eurosport for the evening on TV (winter olympics).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Winter Olympics nah, will watch the rugger earlier methinks.

Missed training yesterday, stood in the buff again in the gym dressing room but this time I was caught as I had not brought my running gear purposely but had forgotten the togs as well. My wife regularly borrowing my fins is causing me untold problems as regards gear.

As punishment for once I got out of bed early today and went for a run before work and did 5 miles, ran a bit quicker than usual as didnt want to be late 42 minutes.

Would like to try and get up early and do a few runs in the morning but I like my bed, maybe when the hour goes back

Christ you have a senior moment with your swimming togs and it relegates you two places in the swim challenge. I cherished that 3rd place!

No sign of my togs around the house or car so off down to the shop for another pair, €25 euros for my normal pair so I spotted a Slazenger on offer for 8 beside it. I felt I was ready for a medium so purchased and off I went.

The Slazenger medium I soon realised was a lot smaller than I thought, so off I went all I needed was the tash and I would have looked like a 70's porn star

1500m straight mostly with pull buoy, didnt time it as had run later.

Tonight run was on treadmill, big running workload this week so no heroics with inclines or anything. Met a young lad in the dressing room beforehand with a massive new tattoo. From his shoulder down to his mid wrist, going to hide it from his mother, only 16 years old, very young to be getting something like that.

Anyways I digress because of this I had to go quicker tham pmp or i would be late for dinner so quickish time for me 9 miles in 1.10

4 miles today but pulled up after 2k. I could feel a slight tightening in my hamstring, I am ignorant of calf injuries but I have had enough hamstring problems in my GAA days to know not to take risks. Rest day tomorrow so I will see how I feel saturday, I assume it is probably connected to my faster than usual time from last night but best not to take chances.

On the plus side I got in a quick swim instead 1000m with the pullbouy with 2*200m coming in at 3.48/3.50. Still not enough to get back my third place though as i see Nomadic has just posted another swim today. Nomadic is doing some serious training for sprint, I forsee longer events for him in nhis future

I am assuming the weekly turbo sesion tonight will not cause any undue stress to the hamstring, it was only a tiny bit tight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,377 ✭✭✭pgibbo

Hope the hamstring is nothing too serious and the rest day sorts it. If you're not able to run with it on Saturday and still fancy some training, a few of us are going for a cycle on Saturday morning. Probably a 70k spin over towards Kilmaine and back. Bring your passport - you know how odd that Mayo lot can be at the border! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

If the hamstring is at me I will for definite, although I think i should be fine.

    Any sign of that logo???

I'll swop you some swim distance for some speed. My swimming is terrible. Hopefully it'll improves in the next few months.

It will come Nomadic, you could'nt be that slow if you are managing 2000m in one session. Well done anyways.

28k on the turbo tonight, 4x10 minutes at race pace with cadence over 100. These destroy me every time.

Got my bmi today, went down 4% from this time last year. Still at 22.7 though so i am over the average. Dropped 3 kilos from a year ago, its hard to lose weight.

On another note our star gym swimmer has got his hands on a watch that counts laps and strokes in swimming, cost him 70 euro. He will get back to me in a week or two with his thoughts on it. Will come in handy for me if it works, a few times i cant decide whether I swam a quick 500 or am missing 2 laps for a slow 500.

He was beside me in the pool today still shooting by me but I wasnt feeling I was going as backwards as i usually feel with him beside me, however i did notice he gets a massive boost from the tumble turns, he is practically half-way down the pool by the time i have started the turn around kick.

Are you allowed tumble turns in Joey Hannon, I wonder is it worth trying to learn, its probably just the fast waves though so probably not worth my while

pretty sure tumble turns in pool-based tri's arent allowed - but either someone on here will know or check with the organisers - and why wont you be in the fast waves ? ;)

One of the lads got one of these last week. He's giving it to me this weekend I hope. He offered it to me to have a test run. He's too lazy to RTFM. I was thinking of getting one of these anyway so the timing is perfect. I find it tough to keep track when doing more than 200s. Even they can be a struggle! :D Let us know his thoughts on it.

No worries this guy is very thorough so it will be a week or two before he gets back to me. He swims for Ireland in Masters so it will be under pressure to perform I think

Today is not going so good for me, I am supposed to do a 9 mile pace run today but I am only out of bed digesting the breakfast and I have the hangover from hell. Late night out at a engagement party last night.

With the rugby on later I am in two minds about what I will do.

Yesterday was better though went to the pool at lunch and did 1000m drills and 1000m straight swim. Fridays are running rest days and I tend to not bring watch to swim on fridays to go easy. Was sorry....after 300m swim felt very strong so I picked it up pacewise till I finished the 1000m. The stroke felt very good throughout so I was sorry I didnt have it timed, it felt very quick.

Went back after work to recreate the magic with the watch on but i didnt feel so good in the water then. 500m in 9.47 and then off for the weekend shave

Decided to split the difference and did my regular 5 mile route with mrsC, she was even more hungover than me so it was slow going around about 46 minutes. Havent downloaded the data but HR was in the low 140's all the way.

Doing some prep work for tomorrows lsr, downloading A French Revolution and a world war 2 podcast, I might as well try something more educational. I listened to some triathlete who did a race report of Ironman Canada last year although she was quick it was pretty boring stuff.

Looking on mapmyrun for a new run too, 4 loops of my usual is boring plus the dogs cop on and they are wating me from the 2nd loop on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Made some newbie mistakes today on my lsr, my first was listening to the small amount of music I had on the ipod first (old ipod). I was smashed for the last 5 miles of this run today and all I had was some historian ranting on about the French revolution for motivation. Any more educational podcasts are going to be listened to at the start of the run.

Went to Oranmore for the run this morning, I am sure it was a lovely scenic run like mapmyrun said but due to fog I didnt get too see too much of it. I got kinda lost and by the time I passed my car I was 14 miles into the run and thirsty and starving. Sat in the car and drank my isotonic drink and munched a few nutrigrain. Got out again and struggled on for the last 5 miles. I am finding the lsr's very hard on the legs, the HR is ok except for the usual 245 spike for the first few minutes at the start, but the legs creak and groan after 2 hours.

Finished the 19 miles in 3.12 avg pace 10.08 per mile avg HR 147

The bigger the German the smaller the speedos...........:D

If I wear speedos rather than my usual baggy trunks will I swim faster? (I'm grasping at straws here)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,830 ✭✭✭catweazle

Certainly not the size of the German anyways

I would have to say yes but I dont know how much, probably only talking tiny gains, all I could say on that was the star swimmer in my gym when I asked any tips the first thing he said was get rid of the Bermudas. I would have to assume it will reduce a little bit of drag anyways

Its gonna take a lot of Veet to make me presentable in speedos:D
