Absolutely not. Our Democracy may be corrupt, but atleast it's ours. I could actually meet the TD who represents me. In the States the chance of meeting and getting to voice your concerns with your Representative in Congress is fack all. Too many people suffered and died for Irish people to just hand our sovereignty over to a massive, undemocratic entity like the States.

Oh wait. We're in the EU.

    D'oh.

Id say are EU neighbours would be annoyed if we did it but then again we seem to be a thorn in their side anyways, I think the americans would not have a problem with it as they see us a some sort of strategic location

Id say its fair to say we would have a resistance force against it:D

The British Army didn't have Predator drones. ;) I'd give the resistance a week, two at outside odds.

no way. we fought for our freedom for hundreds of years and got it. to give it away at the stroke of a pen would make a mockery of the people who laid down their lives for this country

Why op? How could that benifit us at all?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 539 ✭✭✭piby

No and I could spend a few hours on here rattling off a million reasons why not but when it comes down to it we're our own country and we don't need to be taken 'under the wing' of the US.

Just wondering if in the future some time, Ireland made closer ties with the US and then decided to hold a election on joining the US as a protected state or territory would you vote yes or no??, give reasons for your answer.

this thread was closed in the politics forum because the moderators decided it didint belong there due to a few people slagging off the American waight issue, so please people if you dont have anything good or constructive to add then dont bother:cool:

No. We have enough mein feiner politians and religious lunatics here as it is without an evangelical "republican" as our political leader.

I'm going to be serious and say no. After fighting against British rule, we would be spitting in the faces of all those who fought for Irish Independence. It would be a disgrace and if Ireland did join the United States, I would be ashamed.

    No thank you.
    We don't need their "protection".
    We are a neutral country.

I think are neutrality is going out the window with us being part of the EU anyways,
it seems every time I hear about the Irish army we are getting involved in another peace keeping mission over seas, did you know they are reorganising the army reserve to give them the option to serve over seas

It's a definite no from me.

Whatever about the shower of chancers, con-men and corrupt me-feiners that always seem to screw the ordinary people of this country, America is an even more zero-conscience capitalist cesspit in terms of power and fairness; it also invades other countries for no reason.

I also hate the vacuous "celebrity" obsessed bull**** that passes for "culture" in that country, and their native sports are pretty dire too.

And I personally have absolutely no desire to be an American.

I know that all of the above are only negatives, and there are many fine folk in America, and it does have some plusses as a country of its own, but in terms of joining it they would be outweighed by the above.

I'd be more open to joining somewhere with its head screwed on - like Canada or Australia.

Australia seems to be a good choice although I here they are starting to spend serious amounts on their military a sort of flexing the muscle thing around south Asia and the pacific

I've a better idea. Sure, just vote for me and I'll be the ruthless patriot dictator who ruthlessly fixes the country.

    Everyone's happy. :)
