Haven't tried windows 7. My general windows v's linux experience is this:

In windows, stuff generally just works. It's a decent OS.
In Linux, once you've overcome the learning hump, there's nothing you can't achieve.
This is my experience too. A bit of work to get going in Linux and you're free to do whatever you want after that.

Photoshop is a Windows application and Windows applications do not run natively in Linux!

Linux Mint is just another one of hundreds of Linux distributions.

Many are as good as Mint, and others even better, in some people's opinion.

I am delighted you found a Linux distribution that suits you ..... but that is all it is.

Some perspective on this subject would help a lot.
Fanboyism does no one any favours.

    regards.

Of course it is, provided you have a Cygwin install or virtual machine running:pac:

Any chance we can let this embarrassment of a thread die. The arguments just keep repeating - let me summarize:
    1. OP thinks Mint is great
    2. People agree, but point out that other OS are *equally* as good in various respects
    3. OP re-iterates point that Mint is great
    4. People once again agree, but point out that other OS are *equally* as good in various respects
    5. ....
    6. Cycle repeats ad-nauseum, each time becoming less of a debate and more of a rant.
    7. Thread stagnates
    8. Mods close?
    Please?

Yes I think we can agree that the OP has failed the Turing test at this point.

I'm a windows 7 user and have to say I love it.

I think its very much to do with what you have been suing, and you jsut wont change your ways.

I was being told so much about linux and to give it a shot etc. So I did. And I wasnt unimpressed, but I wasnt impressed.

I use my machine for gaming, media and college work. So essentially what happens on windows, can be done on linux no problem, but theres no advantage for me to use it.

My machine is running alot smoother and powerful with windows 7, and my games are a delight, I never tried playing wow on linux and dont even know if its possible.

I'd love a no bull**** assesment in fairness if its worth the effort, online resources seem very much " linux is epic win windows is gay" windows is for winners linux is for ****ter" debates with no real information.

I use my machine for internet browsing, playing world of warcraft, downloading stuff, watching media, playing music, and doing colelge work which can be from word processing to presentations etc.

people like using it and have never heard complaints well there was on friend of mine he said I cant get it too work I said whats wrong he said it wont work I said bring it in and i'll take a look at it.

he text me saying I got it working I said how did you he said I plugged it in.

And can I just say from trawling through pages of your posts.

Your the exact reason I'm never bothered to educate myself on linux, and the reason I'm never arsed installing it.

Your also the reason why there is alot of resentment for the linux community as being a group of "posers" trying to be hardcore nerds of some description.

I posted the post above, went searching through some material about linux, came back to finish reading this thread, to come to the conclusion " **** off".

If anyone however has some constructive advice for me I'm all ears.

I actually have a laptop that gets minimal use, I might throw a dual boot on and use it in college for the next while to see what happens.

    Seriously it's horses for courses,

there is a considerable lock in for windows for games and client server apps and some gadgets

finances are an important consideration, in the past it was worth spending more on the hardware for a linux machine as a lot of stuff didn't have drivers, something similar can be said for paying extra for hardware for MAC's

and yes while linux makes an excellent terminal server client , if you want to run microsoft apps on a windows terminal server you need to pay for the client licenses and client apps too (ever had to by a copy of Access for a MAC ? even though the MAC can't run Access )

system restore in windows can be a lifesaver but, I had a PC at home with windows on it that wouldn't boot, for six months I surfed off a Knoppix CD because I just wasn't arsed going through a windows re-install and all the apps and patches and third party security software.

If you count the time it takes to go from bare metal (new machine with no OS) to editing a document Linux just wipes Windows.

If there is no advantage at all then there is no need to change.
I have had great advantages from using Linux .... so much less admin and worry about viruses and updating sigs and all that stuff.
I do not have to pay for the OS or the applications I use so another great advantage - this time monetary.
Then of course there is the freedom to install the OS wherever I wish and as many times as I want without having to purchase it again and again and again, and then prove to MS that I did so. Another great monetary advantage.
Last but not least for me has been the learning ...... and the availability, mostly without cost, of the means to learn about the OS.
My machine is running alot smoother and powerful with windows 7, and my games are a delight, I never tried playing wow on linux and dont even know if its possible.

A lot smoother than what? A previous install of Windows?
I'd love a no bull**** assesment in fairness if its worth the effort, online resources seem very much " linux is epic win windows is gay" windows is for winners linux is for ****ter" debates with no real information.

Read the BS from both sides and make your own mind up. Most of the BS will be very obvious after a while. Fanboys from either side are a pain. They do justice to nothing or nobody.
I use my machine for internet browsing, playing world of warcraft, downloading stuff, watching media, playing music, and doing colelge work which can be from word processing to presentations etc.

A well set up Linux install will have no problems with your work stuff. I am not a gamer so I cannot comment on WoW.

In general Windows games are for Windows only. There are some that have been ported to Linux.
IMO, if you are a gamer then you need Win for that.

There is always the option on the spare PC to install Linux and to install Win in a VBox virtual machine within it. That should ease the transition if needed. I do not know how those games would fare out in a vm either.

So all I can say to you is that Linux has saved me money, time, frustration, and provided a means for me to expand my knowledge in ways that I did not have available to me when I used Win.
That is not to say Linux is for you, but I believe it would be a shame not to give it a little time to find out if you might like it or not.

I wish you luck in whatever you decide to do.

    regards.

On that point, WoW is pretty much perfect under Wine.

It's just as well that they are using an OpenGL renderer. Anything that works on the Mac is bound to work
well on Linux despite a hacked Win32 API. Too bad Apple don't port their own libraries to other *nix platforms.

Quake Live is teh awesome by the way.
