What about when this weather event is over? I for one think we should all keep a massive, lightly moderated, multipage mayhem thread going everyday, regardless of the weather - I've gotten quite fond of it :pac:

we'll be kept going by talking about how great it was(hopefully) and look for signs of more cold weather to come!

Yip - there was comfirmation on the Donegal forum that the Donegal Postman will be appearing on the Late Late Show tonight if ... he makes it to Dublin and he has the nerve to go on! He said it himself to someone he delivers post to lol. He even started his round early so to get to Dublin on time :D

    Cold one today, lads.
Don't know how it is for you lot but over my way we had a -9c start which I have only seen rise to -5c.
Had snow falling for about and hour and a half dipping in and out between heavy and moderate. That was between 0840 and 1020, roughly.
All fell as pure white powder.

Brought the dog out for a long was as my day in the hills had to be cancelled.
    Avalanche warnings in affect.
    IN WICKLOW!!

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the last recorded Avalanche in Wicklow, in the early 1800's?

I don't understand how councils were running out of grit. There were numerous quarries/concrete companies ringing up Liveline yesterday to say they had plenty of grit to offer to the councils...one quarry in Oldcastle was even giving the grit away for free if the local councils could collect it themselves. So what's the problem?

The 'grit' they are talking about is rocksalt. not just crushed stone.

Just reading the Met Eireann warning, anything from 2 to 6 inches in the east and south, so probably gradually less as you move west and north.

    It seems conservative enough.
They must not think the snow will be that heavy at lower levels anywhere then.

Ireland isnt as white as the UK, pic from Nasa shows it to great detail.

Are the pipes in your attic insulated? I had to insulate ours and cover the attic tank. They were frozen when we got back from Christmas holiday. Also leave the attic door open to let some warm air up.
water in tank is solid ice :o just got rid of some of it now, but how do i get water back into the tank . pipes are insulated, but the part where the water leaves the tank into the pipe is frozen solid

If you have no water coming out of you hot tap but you do have from your cold there is a solution depending on wheather or not you can attach a pipe to your tap. Circulate water through your hot tap via the cold tap. Insert or attach a pipe into you cold tap and insert the other end into your hot tap. Then turn on the cold tap and the circulation of water should remove the blockage.

what it means is you tank in the attic is frozen and your hot water cylinder is empty!!!

Start boiling the kettle. You'll need to insulate that part of the tank too.

not nearly as cold today as yesterday but still cold, yesterday Dublin didnt make it past -4C, its now 0C in Dublin and may rise a little further before cooling down this evening, main reason being today is sunny and yesterday was freezing fog all day.

make sure there is NO insulation under the tank.

insulate the tank and over it.

If the air temperature is below freezing, which it is, then the sun will have no effect whatsoever. The Big One in 1982 was followed by a week of glorious dazzling sunshine but daytime temps were well below freezing so there was no thaw until the Atlantic influence returned.

It's 2.5 degrees here and the white stuff is turning in to clear stuff before my very eyes

Low temp of -10.7 last night in the garden.:D

NOONE calls our glorious Emerald (well currently white) Isle a sh1thole.

    Unless they're Irish... :D

Seems to be clouding over again here in D2. Really effing cold at the mo too. Anyone got a list of current temps?

But I am here a loooong time and I am paying tax (and a whole lot indeed), so I think I am entitled to an opinion. And even to think that Ireland at the moment is a rather ill-managed (hole). I should never have mentioned I am from anywhere else though....that sparked off xenophobia and comments such as "go back home" and and lenghty analysis of my personality, motives, and future prospects. (not everyone in here is sane).
All I originally wanted was to talk about the management of the weather here, because I am quite excited about experiencing winter here, and at the same time appalled with the management of same, seen in comparison to other countries where this is normal and much more pronounced.
End comment: Enjoy the event (might not happen for another 30 years), but take care, drive/walk safely :-)

Don't know where you're getting 0 from, I'm at -6 and it's starting to get foggy.
Bloody well much colder here than yesterday.

Back from a long walk. is stunning, simply stunning outside. No wind, sunny and everything plastered with deep deep snow. Heartedly recommend anyone that can get themselves to the likes of Glendalough to do so, these conditions are really special and unlikely to be repeated for many years imho.
One thing though, get ready for real exercise - of the beaten path, walking in 28cm (as measured after this mornings shower)of powder snow is energy sapping!

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

What I did was put warm water from the kettle in the tank (not boiling water) and it takes a few trips up and down to the kitchen!. It was just the top few mm that were frozen on ours. You will need to cover the top of the tank and insulate it once you get it thawed. Is the side of tank insulated?

Oh right. Well then that is different. I wouldn't know what to do there. My solution is for general blockages in the pipes.

    That's an odd one.
Different temps in different parts of the city, I guess.
I'm not even very high, only about 120m.

Do ME record their temps up in Glasnevin?

There is no cold water coming out from the cold water tap. Does that mean that the pipes have frozen or does it mean something else? Is there anything I can do? I'm in the house on my own.

I always wished to see real snow here - looks great with the hills.
