GPS Data Logger for Hike

    Hi,

    I am looking for a recommendation for a GPS data logger for a hike that I am going on. I need the following: replaceable AA battery and SD card memory. I won't be near electricity for a while so need to be able to swap the battery and to change the memory card if it runs out of space.

    Anyone got an opinion.

    Why restrict yourself to just a datalogger when you can have a full blown GPS? All of the Garmin etrex models with a micro SD card such as the etrex Vista HCx, or etrex Legend HCx as well as the 60CSx can be put into a mode where they continuously write a GPX file of the track with a file name made up of the date, i.e. 20100106.gpx. You don't have to do anything except switch it on and it will record. Plus you have the facilities of a proper GPS as well should you need it.

    No need to worry about changing memory cards ... the total size of the GPX files for a 2 week trip I did last year, about 320km, was only a measly 3MB.

    +1 to either the Garmin Vista HCx, Legend HCx or the 60CSx - all excellent.

    I used the Legend HCx for awhile, and it's great. Highly recommend it. The 60CSx is supposed to be a great unit, and highly regarded by hikers.

    I have a Garmin Oregon 400t now, which is very good, but I wouldn't recommend it, as it can be very difficult to see the screen in bright sunlight.

    It's a fair point. First do any of the Garmin have swappable batteries?

    I don't really need a GPS Map but so if I can get one without it that's cheaper then I would get that.

    Sugar! Should have said that all the above mentioned models, take two standard AA batteries. I have a few NiMH rechargeable batteries that I bring with me, as spares.
