From what I gather some cinemas have both versions available also. There used to be an imax in Dublin(parnell street) but that closed down.At the moment there isn't any imax in Dublin.Imax is just a really big screen I think.I don't think that there in any other difference between it and normal cinemas but I could be wrong.

I always thought the point of the IMAX cinema was that it was like a simulation ride? (I may have made this up in my own head!)

OP some cinemas do not have the license to show in 3D so if you want to see it in 3D just check with the cinema you are going to.

I'd say the majority of cinemas are showing 3D - but not all.

Edit: I like Dundrum cinema or Liffey Valley. Definitely go for 3D - this film was made for 3D!

Not all cinemas have 3D but UCI Blanch does have 3D. They're showing Avatar in 2D and 3D. 3D is dearer but I'd go for it.

some cinemas are equipped with 3d projectors - some are not - avatar is released in a 2d and 3d version -

just check to see if the cinema has a 3d projector

CineWorld in town in Dublin has Avatar in 3D - this film is meant to be seen in 3D! It's definitely one of it's selling points.

You might be thinking of that 4D thing that's on O'Connell St; you see a screen but the seats move, spray you with water and air, timed with what happens on screen. It's a total gimmick but if you've never been in one I'd give it a go.

iMAX is no longer available in Ireland or NI. Real Shame. It's just a massively big screen in 16:9 or a dome-shaped screen. They specialise in educational/nature documentaries (the moon, deep sea, dolphins, dinosaurs, space etc etc) but over the last 5 years Hollywood have been filming some scenes in iMAX - this means that instead of the "black bars" 2.35:1 aspect ratio, for the iMAX scenes, it goes to 16:9 (i.e. the aspect ratio of your TV) with startling clarity. It's roughly 4 times clearer than Blu-Ray. (Resolution is about 8,000 lines). I'd really recommend seeing something in iMAX - but just make sure it's an iMAX film, not a film that's shown on an iMAX screen (like bloody Star Trek 2009)

I can't really explain adequately how different it is seeing something in IMAX than in the Cinema - especially the dome-shaped iMAX where you're looking up and it encompasses your entire field of vision - it's awesome and weird too.

Bottom line, if you're in another country and have the chance to see something in iMAX, go see it! It's an experience!

(for an at-home comparison, pop in The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray and look at the opening scene, or when Batman finds the two-face coin amongst the rubble against the rest of the film. It's amazing. Or even when Batman kidnaps Lao - some scenes intersplice with iMAX and High-Def.)

Thanks for all the info Jayk. Much appreciated!

Is the 4D thing in the Savoy or Cineworld??

If box office is an indicator of a films quality, then Transformers 2 is the masterpiece of the year, and hell, its visual effects are technically very strong, who cares about its plot/characters/dialogue/simplicity? :p

The 4d thing is beside/part of (afaik) Dr Quirkeys. It's more like a ride than a film. Think Magic Mountain or something along those lines.

I probably will go see Avatar again. Of course, I'm a special effects junkie. Some people are screenplay junkies, acting junkies or theme junkies. It's different strokes for different folks. It saddens me to see that the special effects fan is so looked down upon by other film fans.

    Oooh! Interesting.

And is it the full film etc?

Guys, I know I am pushing it here, would anyone have the name of the above cinema or ph no./website for it?

    Thanks in advance!

I don't think it really always breaks down so neatly. I love great visuals as much as anyone, and I love great acting, I love a great script, a film with a great theme. But one of the key things for me is balance. Avatar had a 10 on visuals, and mid level at best at everything else, it just doesn't balance out for me to a good film overall. As I said, for a decent sci-fi movie, it'll do, but I'd really, genuinely hate to see it win Best Picture at the Oscars

On the advertising front I am not sure how people didn't even notice it. It was everywhere. Christ I remember watching an episode of Bones on Sky a couple of weeks ago and part of the plot was a couple of the main characters mitching off work to alternate queuing for the first showing of Avatar !! So you couldn't even avoid it trying to watch a program on the telly!!

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1514861/

This annoyed me at first because I thought it was some kind of money racket between producers but then I copped that one of the actors was in avatar..probably was some money making idea actually..

I can't see that happening. Best Picture is supposed to have high values inpretty much all departments. Now, Best Visual Effects it's a shoe-in.

I'm telling you, I frequent a lot of the sites that monitor the oscars and all the preliminary critical and guild awards, best picture is going to be either avatar, the hurt locker or up in the air, with inglourious basterds as a long shot.

    I always wondered about that.

The Fourth Dimension is time right? So is it a time machine of some sort?

havnt seen up in the air, but of the three I have seen, I'd give it to the Hurt Locker personnally, very enjoyable film. Avatar and Inglorious Basterds wouldnt be my first choices for best film nominations. I'd give best visual effects to Avatar perhaps also Score cause not many others stick out for me this year and best supporting actor to Inglorious basterds.

I really want to see Up in the Air it looks great.

Well, when you think about it all movies involve you travelling forward through time.
Generally though, when 3D rides refer to '4D' they simply mean they splash you with water or blow wind at you.

I know, but I wanted an excuse to go and ask for a ride in their deloreon...

For every aspect of everything there's people who look down on other people. Music snobs, film snobs, TV snobs, you name it. Trick is to try to disregard anyone's opinion which detracts from your viewing pleasure. It's why I spent a lot less time interacting on the net...too many people hate everything! (although Boards.ie is great alternative to the regular nasty internet :D:D)

:pac::pac::pac: Laughed out loud to that one. It sure is. I dunno how to market "pseudo-physical movie experience" without being condescending!!! 4D gives you an idea, I guess lol

just saw sherlock holmes for the 2nd time and if I could I would swap my nomination for best score over to that, second time through I really paid attention to how awesome of a soundtrack it really is.

    +1

Balance is key. But it must be balanced strength to make a good movie for me.
8.5 or 9 is better in 5 categories than 10 in 1 and 4 or 5 in all others.

Has it reached one billion yet? Have you a link?

So in all likelihood, by the time Avatar leaves cinemas, Cameron will have the two largest grossing movies of all time :p Pretty mental. Though I think you have to factor in the more expensive price of 3d tickets, which may push Avatar past that boat movie.

    heh

just took my mum to it cause I thought it might have been the sort of film she'd like.

her first words to me coming out *what a load of rubbish*

surprised she disliked it so much. but it seems the bit at the end with
the animals of pandora coming to their aid
really rubbed her the wrong way.

Reading back through the thread it appears that a lot of people expected Avatar to be a film with everything. They expected a truly original Oscar worthy script, with an amazing score, Oscar worthy acting, effects, sound mixing, costumes, cinematography, etc, etc.

The film is a truly unique cinema experience which has managed to enthrall audiences around the world turning into one of the biggest events of all time. I really cannot wait to see it again and will order the Blu Ray the moment it's available for preorder. I will also more than likely download the blu ray rip the moments it's available and watch it time after time.

With Avatar its the perception people have going into the movie.

I left it a while and heard all these great things about it. When I watched it I was completely indifferent about it, probably because I was expecting 'one of the best movies ever made'.

On the other hand deliberately told a friend it was total crap and he enjoyed the film more because he was expecting a crap movie.

Perhaps Avatar is a victim of its own hype?

Everyone I've seen it and myself have loved it, I've seen it twice and enjoyed it even more second time around, so basically I think the problem is that there are an awful lot of tossers out there who like to pretend they know a lot about films by hating anything mainstream.

Are you serious? Christ, I enjoyed the film but I can see why people didn't - the characters were wafer-thin, performances uninspired and script largely quite woeful.

Referring to other people as tossers isn't going to change their minds.... here's a shocker for you.. people have different taste in films!
