These may be civilian aircraft under contract to the USAF and using the latter's "Reach" callsign.

As to what they're "up to", the USAF has a large force of transport aircraft and for as long as I can remember these have been active in European and of course Irish airspace, on transatlantic and intra-European transport duties. No great surprise when you consider the major overseas military commitments which the US has at the moment.

I didn't think you would be able to see military traffic...

    Another Gem from boards.ie...

Can see many hours sat out in the garden with the kids trying to identify what planes are overhead. We are right below one of the flight paths into Dublin.

    Thanks OP.

They're not military. They're civilian aircraft chartered to transport US miltary back and forth from Afghanistan and Iraq and elsewhere no doubt. There are often several flights a day into Shannon.

I had a look at that site last night, there was quite a few DHL and FedEx planes out in the wee small hours mostly 767s and MD-11s

Several jet aircraft flew over North Sligo at intervals this afternoon, all headed West.

I counted a dozen before going indoors and saw more later on. We do not see many aircraft in this area so this number is striking.

My first thought was they were American military planes but I thought they usually went via Shannon. Can anyone suggest what they were?

Could be anything especially US and European Haeavies ( 777, 747 ETC )

    How accurate is this?

I see planes along the taxiway at dublin, so it would seem quite accurate, but this Avro seems to be heading for RWY 11.

Perhaps in a circuit to land?

Essexboy, the routings change by the day to take advantage of favourable winds etc. Usually a lot of this traffic passes over the Galway area. Sometimes they actually appear in formation, they're so close. But it's all civilian or mostly so. They obviously were a bit further north that day.

It was the numbers and formation that surprised me - we don't normally see anything like that up here - but I know nothing about aircraft traffic.
