iPhone/iTouch Touchscreen

Can anyone help settle an argument? The touchscreen on an iPhone/iTouch is very sensetive and quite complex. Can anyone explain how it works. It will react to a touch from a finger, elbow, nose etc but not from a comb, pen, other inanimate object! My brother claims it's to do with electrostatics but his mate claims it's to do with pressure release. Tbh none of them seem to explain it fully! Anyone clarify?

Weird question, I know, but one we'd love an answer to!

It's something to do with the electricity that comes off your fingers, etc.
