The IP address is assigned by the ISP to the particular device, be it router, modem or computer. In most cases it will change regularly, and will stay the same for a few days at most. There are occasions where static, or unchanging IPs are assigned, but that's usually an extra service that has to be asked for.

If the stolen laptop is connected to the net, the IP address will be different, even if your friend has a static IP, which is unlikely.

There are software packages which can be installed prior to the theft which can track the laptop once it's been stolen, but obviously that's not much use to your friend.

Just curious as I might have a package being delivered to me today and I seen a big horror story thread here on boards about their supposedly poor service.

Well I rang them on the 23rd to ask their delivery dates for the xmas period and yer man said deliverys on Christmas Day only until 12:00

Yerman should change all his email passwords too, he may have them saved on the computer for auto logins etc.

The MAC address will always remain the same.

You can't trace a MAC address on the internet(that I know of), but you can on a local network. So if it was stolen on a college campus for example, they can see exactly where any given MAC address is on their network.

Bit late now but here's some free open source tracking software http://preyproject.com/ for if they get a new laptop maybe.

DHL usually take 3 days from Germany. At least all my experiences did with them anyway.
