I cannot find any reference to this on the forum.

Are side indicators (direction indicator repeater lights) mandatory in Ireland?

I don't believe they are a legal requirement.

I have noticed most cars now have them and a few older cars do not so I was wondering if they had become a legal requirement.

I think they are, which is one of the reasons why US spec cars aren't able to be brought into the EU any more as they don't have side repeaters.

AFAIK, if the front indicator also shines to the side then the front will suffice. A lot of older Japanese cars had the indicators low down in the front bumper, they also had a repeater light in the parking light unit, and none further back on the wing.
    Like so:

So to recap, they may be a requirement, but not specifically required to be on the wing, and NCT won't fail you if you don't have them.

    What about Northern Ireland.

My son just bought am 03 BMW 320 in the North and it does not have any.

Instead it has two small grills. May have been retro-fitted.

Is it automatic by any chance?

It doesn't appear to be a requirment.

Although they are neccessary and helpful.

Definitely necessary for safety for yourself and for the other drivers.

That's why I wonder if they were taken off and replaced by fancy grills.

    It's a manual 320d Touring.

Sounds like your son's 320 could have originally been imported from Hong Kong or Japan.

unusual for a manual gearbox bazz. That's why I asked if it was automatic!

It's a UK car but the previous owner put on a few go-faster bits which are being removed.
The VRT is paid and the car is Irish registered now.
    Next step is the NCT.
So that's why I asked the question.
