I've just found out my Skype account has been hacked. I got an auto-charge email this morning even though I haven't made a call recently.

I logged in to find some wanker has been making calls to Sao Paulo Brazil using my credit for the last three weeks. I rang the Sao Paulo number but obviously that ended badly!

I've sent an email to Skype an am waiting a response. Anyone else have this happen to them? What kind of support can I expect? Should I close my account altogether?

Change your password if you haven't already.

Already done so. Skype have offered a refund. Very disappointing that it was hacked. Hard to trust the service now.

By auto-charge, I presume you mean that when your Skype credit runs out, another bucket of time is automatically charged to your card account. I wouldn't use this option - you could be away on holidays or in hospital after an accident and not checking your emails for several weeks, and return home to find several dozen "auto-charge" emails.

It is far more secure to buy your time manually as you require it, and enter your card details manually each time. Only buy time from your own PC (a pc in an internet cafe or similar might have a keystroke logger to steal your card details).

Be sure to use a complex password to make brute force attack hacking difficult. Something like q9NzV83XQFFRye3z rather than "bonzo"!

Same thing has happened my skype account, not much credit on it but very concerned about the fact it has been compromised.

I have changed my password (letters and numbers) but have no idea how they got got my details. I only log in from my iphone or my laptop and cant recall every logging in on another system.

I guess its time to run scanners on everything as perhaps McAffee has missed something. Any advice appreciated.

Update, addressing this with skype, account has been blocked and being reset or whatever.

A piece of advice to any users would be to keep your account balance low and make sure you turn off the auto credit option so at least you only get stung for the few euro thats already there. It would seem that I was lucky as I had that turned off but found a fair few examples of people getting hit for a few hundred.

Running another scan on my main machine at the monent in case there is any malware / spyware there that might have been the cause. I have done work today from another machine that is clean just in case
