There's only 2 good uses for cucumbers, and eating them isn't one of them

    whats the other use for

Mendelian genetics ftw! Don't know of the statistics, but the ability to taste phenylthiocarbamide is one of those things you have or don't. Apparently the phenylthiocarbamide gives it a very bitter taste which is pretty horrible. Just tastes like soggy nothingness to me, hate it all the same.

Some information garnered form wikipedia and therefore subject to being completely wrong

That's what I said!! My one in five is probably very wrong as well!

Because if you can actually taste what cucumbers taste like you would know that they really are poisonous tasting and they defile anything they touch. I can't eat anything that a cucumber has touched as the nasty, nasty taste of death has covered it.

Really cant agree-they taste very sweet but like a lot of veggies noadays its difficult to get a really nice one unless its organic

they have their very own wikipedia page that explains they were not very nutritious, so only rich folks could afford to waste their money eating food that had no point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cucumber_sandwich

basically a way to show off how much monies you had back in the day!

i personally lived on lettuce & miracle whip sandwiches when i was in school.

most vile tasting food known to man would have to be tripe. the taste, look, texture and smell of carpet boiled in piss

Actually only one in five (or something) can get the real taste of cucumber which is vile...to those that can't it’s that water taste you speak of...

I heard that too. My biology teacher also said that whether or not you can taste it is genetic.

Now, I dunno where I got this, but I thought the chemical responsible was propylthiouracil, not phenylthiocarbamide. Either way, you're all sort of correct, in a way.
There is a vile tasting chemical present in cucumber, and it transfers quite easily onto other foods that a cut cucumber touches.
Whether or not one has the ability to taste said chemical is genetic.
Current thinking is that about 25% of the population each are non-tasters and supertasters, while the remaining 50% are partial tasters.
This explains why to some people cucumber tastes like water, to some it tastes completely vile (and I'm one of them; Jesus, I can't describe how vile it tastes) and some people fall somewhere in the middle.

EDIT: Just Wikipedia'd both chemicals, and (assuming W is right), I was wrong and ScienceNerd was right.

I was listening to the radio yesterday and it reminded me of something that I had always wondered... why are they considered so fecking posh?? They're like the cheapest sandwich filling EVER!!!!

We used to get these going to primary school for that exact reason. Our teachers were probably talking about us in the staff room, lol saying "who do they think they are" When in fact we were too poor for anything else!! ha!

BTW, we later upgraded to chicken and ham paste in a jar - I see you can still get these, ha!

I think the main reason why people think that they are 'posh' is due to the fact that landed gentry used to eat them during the hot summer months, as they were a cooling snack.

Propylthiouracil is a drug for hyperthyroidism. Phenylthiocarbamide, also known as phenylthiourea, is what flavours cucumbers.

God I actually feel nauseous just reading this thread. People who can't actually really taste cucumber don't understand how awful it is. I always ask in a restaurant if there is cucumber in their side salads because if it comes into contact with anything on the plate it's totally ruined.

I know people might think that's an over-reaction but it's the most disgusting taste, seriously. Even the smell of it if people around me are eating it puts me off my food. I cannot STAND the stuff, it ruins everything in it's path!!!

How do the other cucumber haters feel about melon? I normally quite like it but if it is under-ripe it has that nasty cucumber taste. Especially stripey watermelons, they can be really cucumbery.
