Shrouded to the North they may be, but it is obvious something in my set-up isn't right when I can receive a solid version of the service on a cheap STB but an expensive HTPC set-up can't. Even in Armagh which is close enough to the border, never mind people as far away as Hillsborough getting great reception. I just don't know what the hell the problem could be....

They are probably using 167khz offsets on the centre frequency of the RF channel. This has screwed up some PC based DTT systems and some STBs in the UK where they also are now using offsets (because there are more and more high power DTT stations on the air.)

Even when using programs like Media Portal or DVBDream (which allow you to scan using offsets) I am still unable to pick up any signal on CH53/730MHz. Shame, the system works perfectly apart from that with all my FTA digital terrestrial and digital satellite channels in one handy EPG that is a breeze to flick through and record from. It is just missing the 4 Irish channels... I suppose I could add them in as analogue channels but it would be nice to have proper digital widescreen reception of them with EPG/recording facilities.

Re. the pics of Clermont Carn tx. There are no shrowded DTT transmission panels on the mast. The only panels installed are directed in a SW direction, i.e. the ones on the lower section of the mast.

:confused:Does anyone know if Clermont Carn is transmitting DTT at the moment as I am getting nothing except for the radio services.
I was receiving them up to about a week ago on the new Panasonic tv (with MPEG4)
I asked this on another thread, but did not get a clear answer.
Hope RTENL havn't changed to that 0x16 setting.

    Thanks.

Note that there is now an authoritative discussion about the configuration of the new Clermont Carn mast below, and a detailed post from Jordy discussing the configuration there, during his visit there. See link:

Noticed yesterday that the RTE channels (along with TV 3 and the RTE NL test) appeared on my Sony RDR 895 DVD recorder. EPG info was there as well so the "null " to the north must have been removed at some stage over the last few days. It seems to be back again as they are all unreceivable again today.

Just sound I presume due to different MPEG transmission? I am picking up these also with sound and EPG on both Sony idTV and Sony analogue/digital recorder. I live in Moira and have a 52 element Triax with masthead amp.

Buy the Sagem Picnic box from Curry's for £19.99 or PC World and you will be watching RTE DTT.

Even though you are not receiving anymore, does the Sony keep the channel names stored in the EPG?

Does it actually recieve MPEG4 transmissions or do you just get audio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Rick_

I got my MPEG4 TV and the channels tuned in finally, but it's saying no signal, even though the signal strength is at about 50%... are the channels off air this evening from Clermont??

TV is saying it can receive 54% strength but no quality.... damn :(

    All currently on air Paddy

I see, the reception is flicking between no signal and a garbled mosaic screen, seems the signal has dropped here recently as there was steady reception the last few weeks. Even the other STB's that can get audio only are just giving garbled sound now. (Typical, it works up until the day I get the suitable equipment!)

Still, got a nice new LCD for the kitchen will all UK Freeview channels and RTÉ analogue with great pictures, but when RTÉ digital works I can finally stop switching to analogue and keep the TV digital only! I even have the channels I want in the order I want so channel hopping is a breeze! :)

Signal as strong as it has ever been here. No breakup and I see that they have the text service running & working!

btw Paddy what lcd did you get as I'm in the market for one at the moment?

    SkyC

It was a 22" for the kitchen the LG 22LH2000 (other, larger sizes available), lovely TV and sitting lovely on a bracket on the kitchen wall, picture quality is stunning and it is MPEG4 for the RTÉ channels, just not a strong signal here any more to watch them on... :(

TV was £205 delivered from Richer Sounds in Belfast. Late one though but they are on Amazon for £199 with free delivery last time I checked, bigger sizes are also on there too. :)

No MHEG5 text on my Sony W4000 telly at the moment even though the MHEG5 indicator is on.

Clermont Cairn is now receivable (sound only) in the Jordanstown area. Has the null to the north now been removed and is this permanent ? At least I can now receive all the digital radio stations.

With DVB T2 receivers becoming available over the next few months in the UK I should, hopefully, get decent pictures. I assume these will receive the tests ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Rick_

I can now pick up the tests myself Peter after a long period of nothing. Either the snow is in some way helping the signal due to less traffic on the roads or interference from outside sources, or maybe the power has been bumped up a bit, who knows?

The reason you are getting sound only Peter is because you have an MPEG2 TV whilst the Irish DTT Broadcasts are in MPEG4.

What model Tv do you have ?

About the null you mention, there are no transmission panels on the mast that face north (i.e. the last time I was up at the mast). The only panels installed are directed in a SW direction.

"RTE News Now" just has RTE1 at the moment instead of the previous rolling news feature.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Rick_

Had the DTT tests for a day (after many pain-staking months trying to tune it in) but now have not been able to tune it in since Christmas. :(

Noticed yesterday evening on my Sony V4500 with TV3, the tv is now auto-switching to the picture ratio the programme should be in. TV3 news items are now switching the telly to 4:3 mode. Before this the tv remained in 16:9 format, with the picture being stretched out. You had to adjust it yourself to get the right ratio.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,620 ✭✭✭Rick_

They seem to be getting there, just very slowly.

Is it just on TV 3 this is happening or do all channels do it? I doubt it will ever be seen on TG 4 as they crop all 4:3 content to 14:9 and broadcast it with a 16:9 signal. I wonder if RTÉ ONE and TWO have auto-switching for 4:3 content?

I also wonder if Clermont is testing all 4 frequencies yet? Most other transmitters seem to have done or are currently doing it, but Clermont has not...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,634 ✭✭✭Mayo Exile

TV3 which is still broadcasting a 4:3 format test card is now called "TV3 (4:3 aspect ratio)". Also the "RTE News Now" channel seems to be broadcasting MHEG5 text. Don't think it was doing this before now.

Nah, the only one still doing it is Mount Leinster in order to jam the Welsh Freeview services.

Didn't stop them doing it to Radio Nova and Sunshine Radio back in the 80s.
