Don't think you can remove the region lock. Anyone who might be more knowledgable feel free to correct me.

no you'd have to modify the firmware, this cant be done

Also Japan is region 2 dvd.

So the only problem you will have is with region locked Blurays.

Japanese dvd's are region 2 NTSC, and the japanese ps3 doesn't support PAL dvd playback.
