    am thinking of buying this:
    http://www.corkartsupplies.com/store/product/18517/Screen-Printing-Set-%28System3%29-/
as a present for a friend, but was wondering if anyone who knows more than i do (i.e. anything at all) about screen printing would be able to say if it's a good beginners kit.
i had assumed that screen printing involved cutting templates out of sheets of plastic, or something impervious to ink, but the kit above seems to use a medium which is painted on to screen out the ink; is that a good way of doing it?

Most people start off learning to silkscreen by using templates cut out of paper/card but the majority of screen printing is done using photo emulsion - I've a step by step guide to photo emulsion silkscreening here - you can use the template method with the above kit but I'm not sure how good a kit it would be for someone whose never done any silkscreening. If your friend has done some printmaking it would be ok for them.

Its a good kit for a beginner. Buy it. The book thats with it is good too. If the person has a liking for it after messing about with this kit they wont be long upgrading all their equipment etc but if they dont like it then at least it didnt cost a fortune.

If you/they need any help or info id be more than happy to help out: Message me here: http://myspace.com/thebandmerchguy
