3GS iBoot 359.3.2 - No Jailbreak , Has the Cat caught the Mouse ?

Hi,
It seems the game of Cat & Mouse has stepped up a gear ........

Apple have totally changed the bootrom on their 3GS which will render ALL (yes ALL , RedSnow Blackra1n etc ) known jailbreaks USELESS .:eek: ...this new iBoot is now been installed on all new handsets , can it be updated via iTunes ? ..hopefully not .

So with the update of the baseband from 04 .26.08 to 05.11.07 and the iBoot now changed to 359.3.2 , it seems Apple have taken back control .

No Jailbreak ,No Unlock available as of today for such handsets.

So if your thinking of getting a new 3GS and jailbreaking you better hurry and snap up stock that has not got iBoot 359.3.2 installed .

I thought the Blackra1n / new pwnage tool (Mac) were JailBreaking no worries? I know they can't unlock, but I though J/B was all good.

If you have a iPhone with the old iBoot you are fine as the current Pwnage and Blackra1n will still jb , the exploit Pwnage and all jb's use has been closed with iBoot 359.3.2

BUT

As of the 1st handset to be manufactured with bootrom 359.3.2 installed there will be no Pwnage out there to jb , also with the current baseband not unlocked it seems Apple have full control back of their handsets , currently been manufactured that is .

Can the bootrom be updated by Apple via iTunes ? ...I dont know but i doubt it , watch this space .

Another Important thing to note is even if you have your ECID/SHSH logged and saved (eg. CYDIA server) that will be useless on a handset with this iBoot version .

Hopefully it won't be too long until they loose it again. I'm only new to the iPhone, but this seems to be a very long time waiting for an unlock for 3.1? They seemed to come quicker before?

I really dont get why Apple spend so much time and effort on this cat and mouse game and just let people do what they want to the phones. Sure, they could even use it as a reason not to be liable under warranty. They make software and operating systems for their computers that either has no serials or if it has serials... well, better not go there! and must lose more money this way. They also must sell more phones when the hackers release JB and unlocking software - I'd love to see a sales graph for the periods when the hackers release stuff.
Surely the networks cant have that much pull over them?...

Because Apple are a very controlling company. All of their non-Mac devices are locked down - iPhone, iPod, Apple TV.

They don't want unofficial apps/modifications causing problems with users' iPhones and making the iPhone look bad.

I'm sure they have more reasons... not to say I agree with any of them.

3.0 was available as a "developer preview" for a long, long time before the "official" version of it was released to the public - the Dev. team had managed to figure out the jailbreak and unlock process for it before the public release, that's why it looked like it was available that fast.

And I'm sure they (or someone else) will figure out how to get around the latest changes - it's just hard to predict how long it may take.

I am sure it will come but lets not forget this is the 1st time (to my knowledge) that they have changed the bootrom to prevent jailbreaking , its always been firmware changes to date .

As for why Apple do this sort of thing ...MONEY MONEY MONEY !
The way they see it is.. they have been making so much money on iTunes App store that every jb phone means a loss in revenue from Apps .
I have also read (unconfirmed) that Apples slant on a Jailbroken phone is "These can potentially be a threat to home land security" now how in Gods name this can be , I am still trying to work out ?

Apple have always locked software hard to the hardware, and not simply for money. It does make for a better user experience in the main. It always made sense to me that a company make software for its own platform, and places very strict controls on what can and cannot work on it. Saves them hassle when a third party app crashes out their machines. Some of the excuses to justify it though, can be funny. Lackofcolour hits the nail, but like its a bad thing. Are symbian, Windows Mobile and Android open source?

Also, thinking back to the original iPhone, it was ludicrous how open that was. It seems to me, that it was when it became so popular, it became obvious that the app store could be the real income source for Apple,. and they became a lot more serious about locking it out. It seemed to me to be just a gesture to the operators that they were trying to stop it being used on other networks, when in reality they didn't care once they weren't getting a cut of the revenue.

The value of second hand jail broken / unlocked 3G & 3GS is going to go up once these new units hit the shelves. Get a comfortable chair because it might be few months before you see a new jb/unlock.

Why does jailbreak exist? To get pirated Apps? No!

To be able to subvert the government, deal in criminal activities and terrorist acts? LOL HELL NO!!!!

Jailbreak exists mainly for two reasons:

1. To be able to unlock a phone you bought legaly with your own money paid in full and now the network wont unlock it for you.

(This inability to have it legally unlocked only lines the pockets of people that have access to unlocked iPhones and sell them on ebay, hell this can feed into criminal organisations more than jailbreaking can :rolleyes:)

2. Themes and customisations. (It is very obvious Steve Jobs never owned a mobile phone before).

Lots of people jailbreak (me!) to be able to put some nice themes and customise the sms tone.

Every single phone I have ever owned has let me customise to some degree.:cool:

I would buy themes from the App Store if I was given the chance, let me change the sms tone and I see no need to jailbreeak and I am sure I am not alone.

So wise up and smell the coffee Steve jobs and Apple. You are the reason jailbreaking was created and so prevalent.

I am literally a few months away to jumping ship to Android, just waiting for a phone I like the look of (maybe the Sony Ericsson Xperia X3?).

Now don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone (in its jailbroken state) but am sick and tired of this cate and mouse game.

Can I upgrade, will my phone be permanently un jailbreakable?

Do I want to keep my jailbreak or use a cool new feature in a new update?

Well you know what I bought the phone with my own money sans contract, so I want my cake and eat it too!!

So I will keep my eye out for what's on the horizon, and if Apple and Jobs keep being pigheaded then I will jump ship.

without sounding stupid , how can u tell what iboot you have?
My mate did a jailbreak on my phone last using the 3.1.2 version, but the sync wont work.. so I will prob that the jailbreak off, the Installous works but each app i dwonload seems to have a problem with it..so I removed the jailbreak

I doubt the boot rom would be updated over iTunes. It's the lowest level of firmware and the phone would be fecked if anything went wrong. Only new phones will be affected!

Does anyone have any idea when this updated boot ROM will hit the shelves? I've been thinking about selling my Jail broken 3G 16Gb and getting a 3GS, I will not be doing that if I can't jail break the new one!

Reports from the States suggest they hit shelves last week , no reports from Europe yet .
It's pretty impossible to predict when the 1st will be seen as that would mean been able to forecast how many of the old bootrom are left in stock .
Only suggestion left is take a chance but do it quick!

I personally don't care so much about the jailbreak, more the unlock aspect. I guess I was lucky enough in that when my 3GS arrived a few weeks ago it still had the slightly older version of the OS and firmware. So I was able to unlock it and I'm using it happily on Vodafone.

I think they have released another update though. I had something pop-up up on iTunes saying did I want to install 3.1.2. I ever so politely declined

In fairness, I don't know why Apple don't sell the phone unlocked to let you use it on any network. It's a bit like releasing a Mac computer that only works with a certain electricity provider. Although at least it's getting better now that the O2 exclusivity has ended.

Is there any way of knowing from the box if it has iBoot-359.3.2? Can these be bought off the shelf in the O2 store or is it just online?

YES There is ...

It seems that the serial number on the reverse of the box holds the week of manufacture , it seems that the new bootloader got released in week "40" .

The 1st 5 digits of the serial number show the week the phone was made .
(E.G) xxx39 = week 39
xxx40 = week 40
etc

(" x " represents a number )

It is fairly well established then that a serial number of xx939..... or earlier build date has the older bootloader and can be jailbroken?

You might get some xxx40 that can be jailbroken but its a risk .

Again this info is anecdotal but seems to have been confirmed on other forums as a reliable guide.

Having done a wee bit of research it seems that the 3gs iphones with 3.0 firmware were shipped up until week 36.
So in order to actually UNLOCK as opposed to just jailbreak, find a serial prior to and possibly including week 36.

Yes, up to week 40 can be jailbroken.
But UNLOCKING is a different thing which you can only be sure of up untill week 36. Thats to the best of my knowledge.

some one was telling me i may have lost ability to unlock ? with latest firmware ? is this true, just curious, i'm happy enough to stay with 02, once i keep my JB

Bobby,
If you used the official (iTunes) method of updating your firmware to 3.1.2 or you bought your phone with this firmware on it then you will be running on a baseband that cannot be unlocked (yet) .
So to answer you question : No you will not be able to unlock this phone at present.

You have a jailbroken phone which in itself is a better iPhone than a Virgin one , so enjoy !

UPDATE...

It seems the mouse has got away ...

GEOHOT the maker of the Blackra1n jailbreak has made some in-roads on a JB method for a iPhone running on a 359.3.2 bootrom.
You can now jailbreak these phones

It is a tethered jailbreak method , it is not as flexible as the jailbreaks we are used to , but its a start .
A tethered jailbreak means that if your phone is switched off , looses power or an App crashes , you will need to hook it up to your computer and run Blackra1n again to jailbreak .

Its better than nothing and shows that jb hacks and development is still moving forward & effective , no matter whats thrown at them by Apple.

Still try and get a phone made pre week 40 but if your stuck with a phone with iBoot 359.3.2 then at least you have something to jb with .

Geohot has also fixed some bugs associated with the 1st Blackra1n release.

I have just read and seen a link on this thread that Geohot now has a unlock for a 3GS regardless of baseband (release date Nov4th named BlacksnOw)
Great news for all of you wanting to use a different sim than O2.

Oh how things can change in 2 weeks.

Where we stand now.
3GS with 3.1.2 , new baseband , new bootrom = fully jb(teth) , fully unlocked.
3GS with 3.12, new baseband, old bootrom = fully jb , fully unlocked .
3GS with 3.0 or older , old baseband , old bootrom =fully jb , fully unlock.

As soon as a non tethered jailbreak is available for the most current iPhone with iBoot 359.3.2 then we can safely say "Check Mate" Apple.

I've just bought an Iphone from o2, and unfortunately it has the new boot room!

How likely is it that an exploit will be found to enable an entethered jailbreak?

I'm considering returning it and repurchasing if that ever happens.

It's just not worth the money I paid unless It's jailbroken.

You would be surprised how little you turn the phone off.
If the phone does switch off then it's a 10sec process to get it past the usb logo screen .
