right, to lighten the mood a little bit...

they're doing a Liverpool Player of the 90s poll on the official website...

    http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/drilldown/N166088091015-1516.htm

    so whose yours?

mine would have to be Robbie Fowler. is there any explanation needed?

and a bonus for this, is nobody can say 'Lucas' as a joke ;)

    Fowler by a mile.

The more interesting poll is the goalkeeper of the 90's. We had nobody good really.

Grobbelaar - better in the 80's but probably the winner here
Friedel - better after leaving Liverpool
James - better after leaving Liverpool
Hooper - never a first teamer
Westerveld - best days (tropheys) came in the 2000's
Staunton - only played 15mins, but it was v Everton ;)

David James was a favourite of mine growing up. I'd have him, then Bruce, then Sander.

Did anyone see the clip with the Saudi Prince who was talking with Pool owner last night. was On Sky News. I would be worried. Saudi seems to treating it solely as a business venture.
Seems to me that people who have recently bought into pool dont have much ideal of the tradition club has.
Maybe we are now a business but I think we deserve better treatment.

WTF do you want, A Saudi Prince born in Abbey Road?

Of course Liverpool FC are a business it has been for years, if it wasn't it wouldn't exist as a football club anymore.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh, wrong, tis you who are way off the mark karma.

I dont give a monkeys what carlsberg were 'going' to offer. The fact is, they were dealing with clowns and got a seriously cheap deal for donkeys years. Where are you getting the 8mil figure?........it was never over 7.2 max. They also signed a 2 year extension just before the cl final that was a cumulative 5mil for the 2 years. It was in the echo, i dont have the time to search for a link.

The fact that carlsberg paid 5 mil for 2 years dealing with moores and parry coupled with the new deal coming in shows who the muppets are. While we were winning the champions league our sponsors were paying pennies, even spurs sponsors (mansion house at the time i think) had a better deal in place. Moores and parry love the club but they are/were total idiots.

    Back then sponsership was less.
It's only since Chelsea and then Utd increased the scale with Samsung and AIG that we fell massively behind!

You are comparing a deal that was signed with Liverpool 3 years prior, to those signed be Chelsea/Utd etc.

You honestly think that that is fair?

When the Carlesberg deal that you ae complaining about was signed, it was the third highest in the league.
It's very unfair of you to judge it based on todays markets.

True. Virtually anyone who could afford to buy Liverpool will be planning on running it as a business. What we need is someone who will run it better (more responsibly) with long term objectives of growing the business by making us more successful.

You should know by now that Boggles is right about everything Mr Alan. One day you will stop questioning him and embrace his infallibility.

pretty sure Boggles was refering to the famous Abbey Road (synonymous with Scouse icons, The Beatles). But whatever.

The only people who'd vote for Redknapp are the bitter people who wouldn't vote for Owen.

And locals don't always make good owners - they find it hard to make difficult decisions because the are more emotionally involved. Look at Rafa and Wenger - they can be cold, but they tend to make decisions without emotion, based on logic and reason.

We NEED to be run as a business. If we are operating at a loss, then we are doing something wrong, and that can't last. If you are doing the right things off the pitch, you will have the stability, capital and mentality to get success on the pitch.

LOL well he is definately number one for the best looking players we've ever had.

If he hadnt been so injury prone i think he would have been in the top three best players.

    @ Slick Ric:

Fowler should have been up there with the all time great goalscorers, he was that good. Instead he was a bloated has-been by 26.

Macmanaman certainly achieved a lot once he left Liverpool, but again, he should have won far more England caps and should have been done far more for the unreal talent he was born with. Like Fowler, could have been one of the greats but always lacked that drive and ambition that the like of Scholes and Giggs have that separates the men from the boys.

They were called the "Spice Boys" for a reason after all.

As for Owen, well in fairness Liverpool fans have done a far better job of describing how much of a has been he is in the past few months than I ever could, so i don't really need to argue his case...

Fowler is the 4th top scorer in PL history?

Bit harsh on him i think.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,235 ✭✭✭✭flahavaj

Don't get me wrong Mr Alan, I'd go so far as to say the young Fowler was up there with any goalscorer I've ever seen. But by age 26 he was o the way to leeds and the start of a staedy decline into anonimity. Look at Giggs, still going strong in his late 30's and then look at Folwer, finished ten years before that.

Its sad more than anything how he wasted his potential. He certainly destroyed United on several occasions.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 2,443 ✭✭✭Fink Goddie

26 was very young to become a has been though when you think of players like Teddy Sheringham.

    McManaman underachieved?

He played over 350 games for Liverpool and Real Madrid, two of the most famous clubs in the world. Scored over 50 goals and if there were stats I'd wager over 100 assists if not more.

He won La Liga twice, the Champions League twice, MOM in the final against Valencia.
The guy is one of the most successful footballers of his generation, just because he did it abroad doesn't mean he didn't reach his potential.
