    Hi Folks,
After a few trips to St Annes to watch some of the fantastic nitros whizzing around, I have decided to try and join in the fun! May not be the wisest decision but seems good now. I know I should have asked at the start of the season, but felt really daunted by all the technical stuff.
Anyway, I am a complete novice so please bear with me! I have some mundane questions but I do hope you can help me out with them!:

What should I go for? What class should I be looking at as a complete beginner - 1/8, 1/10th etc?

What exactly am I looking for - I would like to purchase a car, ready to race with little setup required to go racing and as little maintenance as possible until I find my feet. - I like the look of the Kyosho pureten GP Fazer? Can anyone recommend this or is there something else I should be looking at?

My budget is sensible but not extravagant.
I really do not want to buy the most expensive car out there and total it at my first attempt! I would like to learn!

Would anyone have a complete 2nd hand kit that I could purchase or am I better buying new?

If I am to buy new, can you please recommend reputable dealers / websites?

    Many Thanks
    JK

Before you do anything, go talk to the lads in st annes. Find out what they are running.
the reason for this is that you could easily end up with a car that you arent allowed run there. Also im sure they can point you in the direction of a car thats others use there, which is important when it comes to spares, setups, advice etc. A car that more experienced guys know well.

Good to see someone wanting to race, cos its a whole lot more fun than just bashing around the park.
Another thing, go look at other racing, like off road and electric. There is off road electric in lucan every saturday, and off road nitro in navan too. Ye never know ye might prefer it.

    wise words from the doktor.

Personally i havent been back in over a year due to focusing on my real car, but if i was to do it again i would start in the lower group the 1/10th pullstart class its cheap cheerfull and a great way to get to know the track and the whole mechanical side of things. When it comes to picking a chassis what i allways done was had a look at what was being run at the track and why, then had a look at the parts availability and support of each, after that id just have fun and enjoy it, its a great way to spend a sunday.

New or secondhand??? really depends on your budget, if its secondhand try find one at the track that people can vouch for.Again talk to the lads ive bought lots at the track from cars to parts, then lads are mostly welcoming

I might have one or two for sale one pullstart class and one pro class both 1/10th, wont know for sure till i decide what i want to run next season :D

if you have any other questions about the track or car choice post here or send us a pm

    Thanks Guys,
Your points are much appreciated and noted.
I have registered for the ORCA forum several days ago, but have not received activation - therefore i cannot post to the ORCA forum directly. Bit of a pity, because I believe this weekend is one of the last club meets!!

    Keep coming with suggestions anyway!!:D

Dont waste your time on the forum, it doesnt look that busy anyway. Go along to the club and talk to the lads face to face. Just approach them and say hello.
I know im more than willing to chat to anyone who approaches me and happy to give them any advice i can (which is normally "go talk to them lads over there... they know more :)")
If you find no one willing to chat and advise you, then you know its not the club for you.

    JK,

For beginners i would recommend u stick to a 1/10. Approx half the cost but still have most of the adjustability of a 1/8th. Generally easier to start with.
With regards to Car manufactures Kyosho/Mugen/Serpent/Shepard/Xray are all top brands in both 1/10 and 1/8.
Technically regardless of what type of car/buggy you go for there is a steep learning curve as there are a large array of setup changes that can be make to any car to aid improving the handling of each car. Most lads will Help you get going and of course there are numberous books and internet sites which can give tips on setting up the cars. On the ORCA site there are a few links to shops Locally and abroad which people have used. With regards to the forum hasyour account been activated? If not tell me you username and i will look into it for u.

    Thanks Mugenextreme.
First off my account is JFKIRELAND.
I am looking for a 1/10 to get started. Is there an RTR class racing?

JFK, there definately is a williness within the club to have a ready to run class/pull start class open for beginners to get people into the club and racing . The biggest single issue we have had in the past with this idea is numbers. It not worth it for only 1 driver to race on his own in that class. We have over this year had a number of drivers who raced rtr come down to race and when we have had 4-5 or more we can stick them out togather seperately to make it easier on them, less stress from worrying about getting in the way etc etc. I know over this year there where a few post here inviting people to come down to race with us with there RTR/pull start cars unfortunately not many took it up. Its a shame because i am sure there are a hugh number of these things out there just rusting away because people got tired of just bashing them around there road and the enjoyment of racing could give a different dimension to the way the see the sport.
1/10 wise i am sure that kyosho fazer/ hpi Evo4/ team magic g4 rtr kits would be ok to start with. One brand i am not a fan of is cen, they have a few good off-road models but from what i have seen of the on-road they are not really that durable so try stick to the others.
Remember No point in you spending hundreds on gear at this point. Get something cheapish, resonably reliable and that you can get spares for.

With regards to you account on the Orca Forum its showing a active account for JFK not JFKIRELAND. Possible you are trying the wrong username.

Heres a few videos thanks to red-rc by one of the leading European drivers showing the preparation that goes into some of these car.
Quite handy videos to have with some useful tips on Shocks setup/Camber+toe setting etc...
Not all relevant to every car but there are good tips in here.
