Just saw a photo of it there. Quite a bit of damage done I'd say, Luas came quite a bit off the tracks.

No way Luas would get enough speed up there to do that much damage

Even if it did reach a good speed, the front of the Luas is designed to crumple more easily than the side of a bus.

Any news on whether an (inspector-free) emergency shuttle bus will be provided for people who have to get up to Rialto, Bluebell and Tallaght to buy drugs?

Image from the RTE website. Looks like there could have been lives lost if there were people at that section of the bus.

The people at that side of the bus would surely have come loose on impact.

Doesn't need speed. Momentum is the key in a crash, speed multipied by mass ( weight ).

A 30 tonne Luas has a lot of kenetic energy. (guess at Luas weight)

Never would have happened had Dublin Bus not been privatised.

From the pictures, it doesn't look like that much damage was done to the bus. The front of the Luas looks thrashed but that's what's supposed to happen in case it hits a pedestrian. There might have been some injuries from people being thrown from the impact, but I'm reckoning people got away without fatalities.

RTE report says there's no report of any injuries, thankfully.

There's quite a difference between a Luas hitting a bus and a pedestrian!

The LUAS is supposed to crumple if it hits a pedestrian? Wonder what would happen if it got given a roundhouse kick..

Twitter is saying supposedly several people died in the crash. Wouldn't believe that though. Surely they'd of closed off the scene if anyone had been killed. I'm amazed they haven't moved back the public yet.

I don't get it. From this picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/darragh/3926211414/ surely the Luas driver would have had plenty of time to bring his tram to a halt. It appears that end of the bus was hit first and that the forward momentum derailed the tram. And by the damage on the front of the tram it seems to have hit it full on and then slid along the side of the bus.

It now says that there are injuries and that at least one person is trapped inside the Luas.

    Too right.

I was initially confused as to whether it was an accident on the Skibbereen or Drumshambo Luas networks.

    :)
