Based on the responses here, it's safe to say I won't be solely using this site to investigate any cars. I'd rather pay for correct information...

I wouldnt even trust the paid information.
The sources of this information can only be the same, insurace companies etc. The fact that another company charges you for using their site doesnt really come into it. They are most likey using the money to keep their site open.

It seems that mywheels is operation under advertising revenue.

With regards to the odd information found that must come down to the fleshy part of the information trail.
People who work for the sources of this information not doing it correctly or the owner not declaring information etc.

We all know we dont live in a perfect country with regards to this kinda think. Sure after years of telling companies that I have moved letters still come to my old address. The computer that prints the letter is getting its information from a source that isnt kept well. I think its the same here, for what ever reason the information given to the sources by past owners, garages and what not is wrong.

Anything like this should be taken with a mug of salt anyway.
Has anyone paid for this kinda information and compared it to this new site?

+1 the info is only as good as the databases and they are often wrong/out of date

Personally, I'd feel I had some kind of comeback if I pay for information and it's wrong.
The law-talking guys among us may correct me on this, but afaik, by paying for something I have entered into a contract and would have a greater expectation of correct information than I would have of some free online resource.

i suppose when you click the terms and conditions you are denying yourself the right to a comeback paid or not

Done a check of my present car and all seems ok.
Then done one of my previous car which i scrapped back in February and it says that its not scrapped.
Still as a few here have said its only as accurate as those who update it.

Are you sure that's a flaw? Car manufacturers tend to round the figure up, perhaps cartell just rounds down. My Forester 2.5, for example, is 2457cc.

Many of the cars I have seen on that website have their engine capacity rounded 100cc less than their actual figure, which can be quite confusing for potential buyers. For instance, the majority of BMW 520d's listed on the site are down as 1.9's when they should be 2.0 litre.

I agree with you there but I have a feeling like what has been said once you press the T&C button then its a no win situation.

All these cars that havent been registered or at least not coming up scapped/written off is an interesting thing though. I wonder where the problem is. Although I defended the site I think the information could be much more accurate with regards to this.

I think the bottom line is that a free site which tells you that a car hasn't been written off when it has been is dangerous. The average punter will, reasonably enough, take the information at face value.

Taking the info at face value is dangerous however:
Would the average punter that pays a site to get the same info not be in a dangerous situation also?

Absolutely, if the info's no better.

Changed chassis # but not written off, how did that work out I wonder?

Chassis number changed from an MR2 to Ferrari one? :D:D:D

but seriously, that sounds dodgy doesn't it!

If the place, where the chassis number is, has been rotting through and you've got to re-stamp the chassis number after fixing it up for example. Used to be a common Opel problem.

But the Transmission: Invalid one is fun. How do you drive with an invalid transmission ?

On a 97 Ferrari that's been 'maintained with a full documented service history', though? Barring Steve06's theory, i'm thinking either a reshell or yet another case of inaccurate information from mywheels.

It probably is inaccurate information or the case, that somebody entered the chassis number wrong in the VRO and it was fixed later :)

I wasn't talking about that site, which I think is brilliant. I was referring to the poorly thought out new carzone website.

Just checked mine, it came up as not being taxed even though it is. Then checked the girlfriends car. It came up with a warning saying the engine has been changed. It hasn't!
So 2 reg numbers checked and both were wrong!

just checked 5 items in my garage - including a bike - and it was spot on.

...still don't see how they can do this f.o.c. !

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Some of my car details were not correct. It says 90BHP instead of 110BHP. I own a 1.9TDI (red eye) Passat.

Have you checked the sticker in the boot?

I havent as of yet but I owned an all Silver lettered TDI Passat before and that was the standard 90BHP. The garage dealer told me that this new Passat was 110BHP. It went through the NCT and 90BHP was on the certificate form. It is not likely that the red eye in the TDi means that it is 90BHP but I will check it out..This car seems much faster to accelerate than the other one.

I wouldn't take the colour of the letters to mean anything because so many people fiddle with them. Only way to know is checking the paperwork of the car

    Thank you very much!

I hope they keep it free.

And since their slogan is "Ireland's only free automobile history check" and they have a captcha check, I think they just might.... hopefully.
