Photoshop help: how to make text go through a geometric shape?

Hello I hope someone can help me with this. If I have a square, and I want some text to go through the square, how can I make the text appear behind one of the edges of the square? Something like the attached image (weird example, I know!) I would be using photoshop to do this. Any help appreciated! Thanks.

You need to use a layer mask.

So position the text layer above the layer with the square.
Add a layer mask to the top layer and paint with a black to hide that you want.
