    Can't believe it!
Westport was always considered a safe quiet town.... however ...

Look , this could happen in any town in Ireland .

there is a drugs epidemic out there and mixed with drink , and neither the government or the gardai are making inroads on the problem.

My town is also a quiet town ( pop 5,000 ) , but there has been stabbings , hit/runs and many street violence ,

This country needs more community involvement in policing .

Shocking to here this, hope the Garda makes a full speedy recovery.

Hope the youth gets locked up for a long stretch for this. Was delighted to hear he was caught straight away.

this is a joke, stab a garda with a 7 inch blade and the charge is only assault? Should have been charged with attempted murder.

Anytime i hear of assault i think of fists and maybe kicks not something as serious as stabbings and shootings.

Its not really the police or the government that are going to solve this issue until we all face up to the fact that there are bigger issues at play here leading to incidents like this occuring. The first is we have a drink culture and it has destroyed many many peoples lives and those of others in this country and its time to put an end to it. All to often people want the gaurds to make a change or the government but then go out themselves and don't make any changes in their own lives. The people in this country have buried their heads in the sand over the drink issue for way too long pretending we don't have a problem with it . People have become very nasty in their nature and self serving. Most people nowadays wouldn't even stop to help another person if they were dying in the street in front of them. Its all about me fein. This is the road to self destruction. The more you try and bury your head in the sand and ignore the problem the worse it gets.

Go out on the town at night and you'll see. The amount of assaults that are either drink or drug related is overwhelming the police.

Time to wake up and face some cold hard facts. We are in serious trouble as a society when a teenager is attempting to murder a police officer and if you seen his pic on the papers with his middle finger up clearly he is unrepentent. For me anyway i think we've crossed a certain threshold. Is this a product of a broken home or a product of a broken society? Do we even care about people like this or do we just say 'f' him let him rot in a cell then wait for the next would be murderer to arrive. I think we aren't really addressing the root causes of these problems and you can gaurentee we will have more incidents like this occuring unless we solve them.

The other serious problem we have is a justice system which is too antequated to deal with the kind of problems we are seeing in society today. The law needs to act swift and quick with regard to sentencing and set an example to others.

The laws that deal with today's juvenile delinquents(a lot of them off their heads on drugs etc) who aren't afraid to try and kill a police officer are just not providing any deterrent to these types of people. If we are serious about stopping the problem we need to have serious sentences that fit the crime. 5 years for this guy? Should be 15 minimium regardless of age. Attempted capital murder is that end of i don't care what any antequated sentencing law says.

Bottom line is we are all going to have to make sacrifices to stop things getting worse or to reverse the downward spiral.

Although I'm in agreement with Realismpol I would just like to add -

IMO it's a perfect post; however I would clarify that I, myself; would support a system where the root causes are tackled (social services gaining more resources; poor parenting being serious addressed etc) however I would also not be lenient to those have committed said offences.

That is; this boy should be imprisoned for his actions; and for a considerably long time. He's old enough to know what he did.

In fairness most people wouldn't wear them if they were going to court. Not very comfortable in a court room all day.
