Eircom extorting money for alarm system?

    Hey guys,

    Just wondering if you guys have had experience with something like this before. I have an Eircom alarm, not connected to the monitor network, the landlords who lived there up until a month ago were adamant that it was a stand alone unit and that there was no monthly fee as it was unmonitored and a standalone unit. I got a letter from Eircom saying that I needed to either: 1) pay 225 euro a year to connect to the monitoring network or 2) pay a 90 euro disconnection fee. A disconnection fee for something I was never connected to in the first place? Who are they kidding? I left a stern message on the answering machine of the woman who sent out the letter. It will be interesting to see if I hear from her at all.

    AFAIK it is possible to get an Eircom Phone watch alarm without it being monitored. Is this the case? The letter was addressed to the "Householder" so they have no details on file, I think they are fishing for business.

    You can ignore it.

    I bought a house that had a phonewatch system installed. Called them and told them I wasn't paying for monitoring anymore and they cancelled it.
    I do get letters from them occasionally since then though,

    I thought so. But it pisses me off that they are scaremongering like that and presenting only two options when they obviously have no right to demand money and blatantly fail to inform that there is no obligation to pay any money to them.

    Well they certainly can't charge "the householder" a disconnection fee. See what they say if they ring you back. Which the probably won't!

    Your landlord is correct, if it is not monitored then it becomes a standalone alarm. Your landlord paid for the alarm so it is his to do want he wants with it. Phonewatch want to take there phone numbers out of your system so they dont receive any signals from it. If you activate your alarm it still rings them but they dont act on the signals as you are not paying for the service. They are trying to get you to pay them so they can take the numbers out of your system.. Thats a joke in itself..

    They are not inclined to install alarms without it being monitored but will and charge you extra for the privilege. They are fishing for business as most of there customers are fed up with the way they do there business. You just have to look at the prices they are charging for there monitoring, then they want more money for the service of your alarm as every monitored alarm has to have at lease one service a year to be monitored.
