So I did first year in UCD in 2005 before failing, and now after a long break I've applied and been accepted to DCU. I assume I have to pay for first year since I have done it before... Could anybody tell me how much this is? I won't be able to take out a loan and I really do want to go to college, but am so afraid I won't be able to afford it... :(

You'll be liable for EU fees for one year, listed here:

€6245... There's no way I'll be able to afford that. If it was half that I'd still be pushed. I assume if you're getting the Back to Education Allowance you're not eligible for any other kind of grant? And there's no way around this?

I'm desperate, so any advice would be welcome.

As far as I know, if you apply for the maintenance grant from your local authority, this does not affect your Back to Education Allowance.

I'm not 100% sure how the whole grant system will work seeing as you failed before. If you were on a grant then you will likely not get one this year. but give it a go, you must have it submitted by August 31st - if you get it in wearlier you'll get an answer eariler. Or ring your county council, that way you'll get an answer on the spot. Good luck.

BTW if you aren't elegible and cant afford it, then maybe look to do 1st year in the evenings and go back full time next year.

Thanks guys. I did already repeat first year the last time around against my will and under pressure, despite loathing the course and a messy life at the time - I paid the full fee with a loan that I'm still paying off (hence the reason I can't get another loan) and the idea of paying again makes me nauseous with stress.

However, I've got my life together now and despite how it might sound, I am really willing to learn. I desperately want to go back, so will try what you have suggested. Thanks a million.
