I cant stand these idiots who upgrade to the newest thing just because its new. If you dont need the features, keep what you have.

Excuse me, I resemble that remark.

TBH I just have some yoke from Vodafone that can call and text and nothing else that cost €40

Being 100% honest...I do use an awful lot of them, yeah.

I spent about three years switching between various smartphones looking for something that would do phone calls, email, web browsing, notes and calendars, and do them all well. And I never found one that did them all well, until I got an iPhone. Its by far the best interface on a phone I've ever used, and the added bonus of the thousands of apps is great. Admittedly, theres a few things about it I don't like, but it does all the core things I want exceptionally well, and I now regard it as a third hand, its that useful.

And no, no progress on the new Eirsoft website - I had a very busy weekend doing non-airsoft stuff :)

yeah get a tocco instead, even the tocco lite, its cheaper than the viewty, but the screen is better, and the only real difference is its a 3.2 megapixel camera, but you wont really notice the diff, and with the cash left over you can buy a decent size memory card

I use mine a ridiculous amount. More than I thought I would. For example, I'm typing this on an iPhone right now. Earlier, in Croker, a friend was checking for tickets to the Kerry/Meath match as soon as the whistle blew. In between halves I was checking the All-Ireland American football finals (my old team were going for 3-in-a-row). In work I have about a dozen convertors, formula packs, plotters and calculators as well as reference guides for all those things in work I forget but shouldn't. All my emails come to my phone directly like texts.
On top of all that I have movies and some bloody excellent games to help pass the bus rides home from work and I can download any song that comes into my head straight away.

It's replaced my laptop and negated buying a netbook. Most useful piece of tech I own.

True enough, but that's what insurance is for. What I was more worried about was dropping it but it's turned out to be sturdier than I expected. All the same, it's got a hefty protective case now because I'm still paranoid about damaging it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,291 ✭✭✭✭Gatling

my local shopping centre has iphone games machines which means in theory you could own an iphone for 2 euro if your that lucky ,
now when you read the small print on the box it says do not attemp to upgrade the firmware from apple as this will cause the phone to premanetly lock

That's not unlike saying that for €2 you could become a millionaire, if you get a Lotto ticket. That wins. And you can only spend the money in Hungary, on furniture.

Actually, I'll just come out and say it, that's a thoroughly rubbish competition. You might win a pre-f*cked iPhone. Weeeee.

I have an iPhone, incidentally, and going back to my Nokia N73 was an interesting experience last year (before the latest OS update - you'll see few other phones having updates like that). Like going from a new flatscreen to an black and white goldfish bowl tv. Won't be beneficial for everyone, but if you use all the apps and features, and appreciate good design, then it's the best by a good margin. But if you just need a dialler, then yeah, it's overkill.

LGs all look nice on paper, but talk to people who've owned them for 6 months, they'll tell you all is not as it seems.

Mine is always in my chest pocket during skirmishes. Last time out I had a conversation about disabling something in a game whil shooting blues from a tree:)

    My current handset:
    SE C902
5MP Camera with proper lens(If you want a good cameraphone, get one where the lens is covered while not in use)
Internal 1.3MP camera (Never used, didnt see if for a week after I got it)
    8GB MicroSD (€22 sandisk)
    Slim profile 11mm
    Titanium Shell
    Very Dropable
Lithium cell powers it for yonks
    Touch button camera controls
    "GPS"(Cellular version)
    Google maps
    BluTooth A2DP + HT820 Stereo Headphones
    Pokemon Gold for Gameboy

What more could I ask for? Bar a xenon flash like in the C905.

I'll upgrade when an MS "iPhone" comes out. Yes, it'll be slower, bigger, cost more, do less, crash when I try to do several tasks at once and so forth, but at least if wont be Apple :D

The LG is as good as a mini digital camera, but its a pain in the hole for most anything else.

My previous phone was an imported Sidekick 2. It was on it's last legs when I replaced it with the iPhone but it was decent (if completely unsupported by Irish carriers for anything but calls and texts). I mainly got it for the qwerty keyboard and the sheer novelty of it. Before that I had the JCB phone which was pure basic but one of the best phones I ever had. No camera, music player, Internet etc. It did have a 110dB ringtone, an IPX rated case, noise cancellation and shock proofing though. It even floated in water if you dropped it.
A great, robust phone that did the basics really well. Samsung now do a great little phone that's similarly robust but not as chunky for around €100. Cracking little phone that looks good too. Recommended, especially if you break a lot of phones.

I hate that phone, in fact, i hate all sony phones, there horrible to use and they typically use these camera functions as selling tools.

their camera's are crap and having a cover over the lens only leaves somwhere for all the dust to gather, nokia learned from that when they came up with the N95 8GB and N96 following from the enclosed camera of the regular N95.
After 4MP your wasting your time since the files are getting too big for the phone to process as fast as you want and the camera's lens is already limited as it is. As far as features goes i would say the N96 is the best non apple phone on the market at the moment. that said, i don't really like mine and i was mad to pay that kinda money. i bought it simfree for cash and it was 200quid more expensive than the iphone simfree which i then bought for the missus.
Hacing been a nokia user for such a long time i have been temptd by the good looks of the new N97 but from the last few flagship models ive learned not to jump in head first. im gonna see how well it fares for a month or so and if its sh1t i'll get the iphone. :)

So you'll "upgrade" to an inferior product so people think you're cool/rebellious for not buying the one that's superior in every way?

I have a CA Sportsline M4 here I'll sell you for €200, never mind that G&G one...

I've heard good things actually but it's still symbian and there's nothing groundbreakingly different from the N96 apart from the (admittedly very snazzy) design.
Personally I think the only contender to the iPhone is the G1/Android. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me, and now that the Marketplace is finally getting good apps, it's got a good selling point.

No, I know I'm not cool, and as for being rebellious, well, I'm not that imature. I just have an illogical resentment for apple. The only thing from them I'd touch is a MacBook Pro, and only for Logic.

In all honesty though, I spend FAR to much time in front of screens/projections. The less time I spend on my handset the better.

Regarding the camera, agreed maybe 4 is the limit, but I havent seen a 4MP model out so I'll just go for 5. I drop them to 1024 anyways. As long as quality is alright, I'm not fussed.

This has been shrank, but it does me:m9s2.jpg

High Glare in this shot, so reduced quality:

On what grounds does a Macbook Pro become more logical than any other Mac? They're the same OS in varying powers and shapes. Granted the Pro is quicker than the standard Macbook but not more so than the standard Macs.
Illogical dislike is one thing. Resentment requires a sentiment to exist and a sentiment requires a reason, cause or purpose (aka logic). You can't hate for no reason.

Disliking Apple seems to be the new "in" thing. Particularly among those who've never actually owned one. Funny that such a terrible, useless, horrible product has become the most aped and copied system and style in computer technology since it's inception. Rivals are actually waiting to see what Apples new tablet will be like before designing theirs so they can imitate it. Sounds to me like the people who matter think Apple's doing something right.
