Ok so this has probobly being discussed at length in the past and if so feel free to link me to the tread. I am interested in working on a cruise ship for 6 months but have no idea where to apply or how to go about looking for jobs on cruise ships. If there is no joy with the cruise ship jobs I would be interested in either going to London or somewhere in Spain or France for a job. I only speak English but does anybody know a good site for applying for jobs in a foreign country?

    Thanks

No idea about cruise ships, but for jobs in other countries try here for a start: http://jobsearch.monster.ie/european.aspx.

More and more companies are moving to English as their business language, so you might get lucky.

No problem! If you do get a job on a cruise ship, I'd be interested in reading about your experience when you eventually return to Ireland and boards.ie :)

No bother. The reason I would like to work on them is it seems like a good way to save money even if it is a crap job your doing and your working like 60 hours a week. I also can't take anymore of this weather.

Yep. I would imagine you get free food and accomodation, so you could probably save your entire wage.

Also, do you pay tax on a cruise ship? I have no idea.

Thats a good point. I have no idea how the tax system works actually. I'll have to check that out. I would say its hard enough to get work on them that pays anything decent.

Don't Irish Ferries pay €3.50 per hour or something? So yeah, the pay is probably ****. But as stated, if you have no expenses, you could probably save all of it.

And I'm sure it'd be good craic! For a few months, anyway. :)

Don't pay any agency to get a job on a cruise ship lots of scam site out there...

There are agencies but they don't charge you. www.cast-a-way.co.uk
very good website tells you all you need to know.

If you get a job on a ship you need some money to pay for C1/D visa company will help you get one. 1st Flight to ship, Medical.

I used to work on a cruise ship for years and loved it, traveled all over caribbean, mexico, alaska, south america, europe, australia I went for the travel not the money... And the sunshine. No traveling to work, just get the elevator and be there in two minutes...

The worst thing about working on a cruise ship at the moment is it pays in US$ and dealing with complaing US guests... Its all about hospitality:D
Not very many irish/ western europeans work on ships anymore as they can't afford too.
Mostly philipinos, thailand, eastern europeans, Indians (where after 1 or 2 contracts they can buy a house)

The best, you can save a lot of money.. (Free accomodation, food, no bills like petrol, electricity) Hours can be long, 10 hour days, 7 days a week, depending on the length of your contract (4-9months)

Cruise ships are divided into officers, staff and crew, (staff would be the job to go for) much more time off in ports...
    Officers
    Deck & Engine etc
    F&B, Hotel Director,

    Staff
Gift Shop www.starboardcruise.com www.hardingbrothers.co.uk www.dufry.com (shops have to close while in port so lots of time off. Seadays shops are open from 9am - midnight.....

Spa www.steiner.com (work all the time 8am- 10pm)

Art Auctioneer (can make lots of $$) if you are good at selling sometimes makes more $$ than the captain... lots of commissions... but if you are not good at selling zero $$ (parkwest is one company ususally advertised on monster jobs)

there are lots of other "easier" jobs....
    Cruise Staff, Internet Manager
    Future cruise consultant
    Casino
    Port & shopping lecturer www.ppigroup.com
    dancer
    musician

    cruiselines to look for jobs
    www.hollandamerica.com
    www.carnival.com
    www.princess.com
    www.pocruises.com
    www.ncl.com
    www.silversea.com

Just put none in application form. If you get a job offer they will give you a letter of employment then you get a visa from american embassy. I would ring whatever company you are applying for after you fill in the form as thousands of people worldwide apply for cruise ship jobs. Good luck

Tax free, So I have been told by someone who used to work on a cruise

Get proper tax advise from a qualified accountant if working on a ship. It's best not to take tax advice from a randomer on the net, especially the old "a friend told me..." line.
