Alonso ain't going to be there in August..

Hmm cheers for the input. I'm only a casual football fan and my knowledge is lacking in certain areas!

Still, it's early days and I'd already changed my team twice before settling on that one. My whole team could be different by the time the season starts. Then I'll probably end forgetting all about it until the season ends.

Played in the Fantasy league last year but not as a boardsie.
What's the story on using my boards name rather than the name I used in the league last year?

Haven't picked my team this year yet....

Changed my team several times over the last week or so, but think I've finally settled on it.

Going for an unorthodox 5-2-3 formation to start, Gerrard and Lampard being my 2 big money players. Don't want to give away too much more as there may be scouts from my private league watching...

Yeah I'm watching. I'm almost certain you'll change your team again before the start, and anyway what use would it be to me if I knew your team? It's not like I'm gonna copy it as I have no lead to maintain (yet).

    Any advice? :)

    More defenders.

The points for the top 5 strikers last season:
    Anelka 179
    Agbonlahor 146
    Robinho 145
    Van Persie 145
    Berbatov 138

    And defenders:
    Vidic 187
    Lescott 172
    Carragher 161
    Bosingwa 156
    Hangeland 147

Vidic costs 8m, the same price as Yakubu, Carew, Bellamy and Eduardo. He will pick up more points them all of them guaranteed. Woodgate is the same price as a bunch of strikers that probably won't get their game.

Midfield is we're the big points are so probably stick with 5 in there but go 3-5-2 at least. Put it this way, Michael Owen will not outscore every defender yet he's dearer than them all.

btw, N'Zogbia is my pick for surprise of the season at 5.5m. He'll be back playing in his favoured attacking position and Martinez will play the football to suit him. With Wigan's lack of strikers atm he'll probably play in a more advanced role too.

    Read the rules maybe??? :D

You have to have at least 3 defenders in your starting lineup.

Also Owen is on a pay per play deal, im suprised how many people have wasted their money on him and have him as a main striker in their team. He is rarely going to start and if he comes on as a sub you dont get the same points as a starting player so i cant see it as anything but a waste of money to have him in your starting lineup ahead of other strikers gaurenteed their game and points.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,745 ✭✭✭doonothing

Haha! I oughta read the rules alright...

    * Berra replaced by Lescott
    * Mikel replaced by N'Zogbia
    * Owen replaced by Cresswell

    Better?

Thanks for all the advice guys, I am a blatant novice at this stuff and am entering a mini-league with my friends for the first time and, well, my aspirations aren't to win obviously, just not be humiliated :p

Read my above post about Owen. 8.5 = too much at this stage with the info we have IMO.

Ditto Nani and Mikel. Both won't start in all liklihood and thus are overpriced purely because they play for a top 4 team. You will get far far better value for money going for players like Noble (6.0), Collison (5.5) or Dempsey (6.5), or even Pienaar (6.5), who should all start EVERY game for their respective teams, and are likely to chip in the odd goal or assist.

Also I notice a lot of people putting in P.Neville in their team from Everton. I have a feeling that a lot of people are putting him in based on his score from the 08/09 season in which he scored very well considering his price. But this year he is classified as a midfielder, while last year he was a defender which is a huge difference. The chunk of his points last year came from 4 point clean sheets, which he will only be picking up 1 point on from now. Outside of this I can only see him picking up max 1 goal and 2-3 assists at the very best. Neville will definitely pick up cards as well. I would rather have Mascherano at 5.0 who could pick up some bonuses plus probably more 1 point clean sheets, or Anderson at the same price who will possibly hold down a starting spot this year and will play a more advanced role for a top team.

Or otherwise go for a Muamba or a Mullins who I feel will earn as many points as Neville and save 0.5 for elsewhere.

Thanks thanks thanks, that's all good stuff! Owen's out til, as you say, we see more concretely what his role will be.. I had Nani in because I thought he might actually play a much more central role for United next season, but that's complete speculation on my behalf! Neville is soon to be out of my team, probably Mikel too..
At least with United's Asia pre-season we might see how the Owen, Nani, Valencia etc. situations could pan out before losing points over it :)

    Thanks again for the advice!

Get rid of Neville, he only scored so many points last year because he was a defender. He is a midfielder this year so no clean sheet bonus.

Get rid of Nani. I have a feeling he will get his game for United more often this year, but not enough to warrant inclusion into my FF team.

The 3 changes you have already made will help you tremendously.

Anyone even contemplating picking Owen is either braindead or a fanatical Utd fan.

I'm really tempted to change my team to this:

    GK:Gomes (or Green maybe)

    DF:Woodgate
DF:Warnock (or Ledley King or Gary Cahill)
    DF:Faye Ab

    MD:Gerrard
    MD:Arshavin
    MD:Lampard
    MD:Jimenez (or Neville)
    MD:Malbranque

    FW:Torres
    FW:Ebanks-Blake

    Subs:Sorensen, McShane, Zayette, Murphy.

But I probably will change Faye Ab for Anton Ferdinand once Murphy goes to Hull, already 3 Sunderland players! I think Bruce will do wonders for them and from that 4-2 win last night I think they'll be class this season, the new Fulham I reckon!
So is this team good enough then or should I improve the defence?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,013 ✭✭✭✭eirebhoy

My biggest fault has always been picking cheap subs that won't get their game. You'll get the likes of Foley and Caldwell who are guaranteed a game for the same price as McShane.

    Who does Jimenez play for?

That's a very good team but is it wise to have both Torres and Gerrard? I'd generally go for one or the other.

You have a keeper and defender from the same team, leaves you open to losing valaubale points from not getting clean cheats especially when they not one of the big 4. Better to have them from different teams and increase your chances of a clean sheet.

He's on loan from Inter, he plays for West Ham at the moment, he's pretty good from the two games I saw him play for Inter and is obviously going to be 1st team for West Ham!

    Given Hart
    Sagna Skrtel Evra Hangeland Zhirkov
Cahill Gerrard Young A Jimenez Davies
    Doyle Keogh Defoe

I think Zhirkov could be a great signing I know he's expensive for a defender at 7.5 but I've a feeling he'll play as more of a winger with Chelsea so he should get more from Assists/Goals as well as picking up the clean sheet bonus!

Joe Cole will miss the start of the season so it's likely Zhirkov will get an early chance.

There's no way Zhirkov will displace A. Cole, he has to be seen as a winger.
He could be a very good player, they call him the Russian Ronaldinho.
    I think it's a compliment. :pac:

I think Joe Cole's days at Chelsea are numbered to be honest. Ashley Cole will remain at left full back and Zhirkov could fill in there but I think he's going to be a more attacking signing than a defensive one

He was their player of the year the season before last. Injured all last season.

I wouldn't say numbered but his injuries hold him back a lot.
If Ancellotti wanted he could use him in a central position, "in the hole".
    That's a bit OT.

Yeah it's all about having the cheapest possible subs who will get you 2 points if called upon, however this year I'm making an exception for Jack Rodwell. He's only 4.5 and I think this might be his breakthrough year, if it doesn't happen then players like Foley will come of the bench for me

I had Zhirkov on my team up until Ancellotti came out and said that Terry, Lampard and Joe Cole are his 1st team key players, so with Joe Cole and Malouda out the left he isn't likely to get loads of starts so I decided to get rid of him! I don't know though, he said that after the whole Terry and City thing! But still..... too much competition me thinks!

    J. Cole is out for the start of the season..

Have my eye on Crouch atm but am waiting to see where he moves too. I reckon he do pretty well at Fulham.
