If you look at the specs for that box you will see that it is very basic; built down to a price point. No HD output capability, no Dolby digital output, and no SCART  Yes, and no MHEG-5 either:)

NO mention anywhere of RGB - SCART.

Far fewer TVs have S-Video than RGB.

I'd let someone else be the Guinea pig.

I bought on of these to try it out. Can confirm that there is no scart. There is composite (comes with cable) and S-Video. Haven't fired it up yet to see how it looks in operation.

    Definately bad, bad value then.

Altho... a modern LCD will show as good a pic on composite and s-video as it will on RGB. No auto-switching without Scart tho.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

Composite very very poor compared with RGB no matter how good the LCD. Noticeably poorer than S-Video on anything.

No widescreen switching on S-Video and many TV and Set-boxes have reduced bandwidth on the C channel to accomodate VHS. S-Video in any case on any LCD is quite as good as Component or RGB.

Only problem seems to be connection (way )then ?

Picture quality shut be still better than analog one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

    no.

About the same, or if poorly made actually lower. I had a cheap DVD player that even with RGB scart gave poorer pictures than my off air analogue.

Digital only has two inherent advantages over Analogue, if decently built:
    1) RGB signal, so no composite artifacts.
    2) Widescreen signal (RTE could transmit WS on analogue, but that would seriously upset people with no 16:9 mode on their TV).

I got an email from a far eastern source trying to sell me a device to plug into the SCART socket that is a full DTT receiver, with remote. Cost (in bulk ) $16. It has a little infrared receiver that you stick to the TV, and you have a non visible stb. I was told it was MPEG4 compliant etc. I would have to buy at least 10 on trial basis.
    Dear ...........
Scart Port DVB-T Receiver hot selling now, the price is only $16/pcs
Our It is cheapest price in market, if you have order or want to Know more products,Pls contact me

Would seriously doubt its MPEG4. Price would align witgh current MPEG2 pricing.

If you can confirm its MPEG4 it would be a great find..

He confirms it is MPEG4 but it would be impossible to return it if it was not. I do not believe it is mpeg4. This is not a local supplier, so freight is very high, with customs clearance and other rip offs.

I would by one to try, but it would cost about $60. Too much risk.

    And 21% VAT

Ask him for full specifications and the chipset used.

How did this work for you Slegs? I bought one myself for the hell of it and turns out its not really compatible for our DTT even though its an Irish based ebayer thats selling it with mpeg4 compatible splashed all over the page. The sound is grand but the picture is pixallating (my signal strength and quality is over 95%) but i have to say for the few seconds in between the pixallating the picture is impressive even though its through composite video (Did'nt try out the S-Video).
I e-mailed the seller complaining about this and this is the reply I got:

    "Hi!
I do not sell ANY faulty boxes!I sold them a lot to North of Ireland and few of them to Republic. All boxes are brand new and tested by supplier (
www.llmerge.ee )If Your box does not work (picture is not ok,but sound is ok) and Your aerial is ok,then mast signal is not compatible ( mast signal does not match with receiver spec.)You see, there is different MPEG4 encryptions available ( e.g H261,H263,H264..)and that is the problem,if buyers from ireland (ROI) does not check technical specifications before buying,as clearly advised on listing..Such Irish DTT is not official yet,I dont think so that mast tech.spec. are available for public, but I believe that it will be H264 version not H261 as this box can receive.. Sorry, but I cant help You. If You contact to manufacturer ( General Satellite ) you might get software update what will help. Thanks!"

Johnny Foreigner or What!! Yet another bluffer joins us! Who is he kidding, who in their right mind would buy these from the North when they can run into Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Argus etc and buy a STB for 20 quid and even those have a scart output!! These boxes were advertised with the Irish DTT in mind knowing full well they would'nt work properly. Ah well it was worth a try anyway!!

    Hi!

    Answers:
    1) This boxes are MPEG4 compatible - just every country have them own MPEG4 specifications standard.Because Im Irish based EbaYer does not mean that I can not sell them internationally.EbaY market is opened also for rest of the world. And there is many countries where this unit is compatible.

    2) Complaint about what? If You are that smart, why you did not read tech.spec. BEFORE buying unit. I have loads of customers asking BEFORE buying unit if it is compatible in Ireland - and I always saying, that I can NOT confirm that. Was it hard to ask me BEFORE you purchased item?

    3) Foreigner - yes,by the way thanks for the good name,Im gonna use it.
Sorry - but I feel bit racism here.. Was there any difference for You if seller was Patric O'hara? Also I can not accept "bluffer" such I been always honest seller - as You see I still owning 100% positive feedback after 500 EbaY deals.. loads of EbaYers failed on first hundred... It might change soon if people like you start to leave negative feedbacks because them own made mistakes, but what can we do - selling goods have always risk..

    4) Might be there is loads of people like you who knows exactly what they want and where to get them with "20 quid".But there is also loads of people in North of Ireland who does not and with some reason they bought item from me and from many many another EbaY sellers. It is not my problem if you do believe me or not - it does not make any difference for me. About Scart - I think you had enough time to discover ( even in this topic!) that this unit does not come with SCART connection. Another question for you - did you really bought this item on the rush or you just crying out loud because you bought wrong item??I seen kids doing that when they can not get what they wanted...:D

    5) Those boxes has been NEVER advertised with the Irish DTT!!!
Can you or can you not read english??? Please read this auction you bidded again...and you even see, that BEFORE you need to pay for item there is very clear warning that bidders from Ireland ( ROI ) must to check compatiblity extra carefully. Did You read that before you placed order???

By the way - "Finne1993" , that 1993 is your born date?
If yes, that can explain a lot ...

Im sorry if any of You here purchased this item from me and it is not compatible with your DTT signal , but as I explained here - nobody did not push you to buy unit - all technical specifications are clearly listed and readable - and I noticed that most of you here are "hobby installers" so many of you does not read more than sign MPEG4 and if unit have SCART or HDMI connection. Reality is - that behind MPEG4 is so many different digital compression solutions and even aerial solutions are not a same in different countries - e.g. Finland guys discovered (funny enough)that HD DTT comes better signal with VHF aerial than UHF aerial as it supposed to be!

My personal suggestion for you guys, do not rush!
Once Ireland DTT is officially launced You will find loads of different models and better prices from the shops than buying receivers today from internet. I can bet that "Currys" will have full HD receivers comatible with MHEG5 around 100 euro , compare cheapest similar from internet online shop is approx. 150 euro .

And I do respond for all of you one more time - I NEVER sayd that units Im selling are suitable for Irish DTT - ask from SaorTV , i warned him in first place that unit is possibly not Iirish DTT compatible ( such first ones I sold had false information on listing )and he still bought it..so do I must feel quilty because man wanted to buy and test ??? Might be he just wanted to have cheap signal tester when he goes out for installing ?

Thanks for reading this post and that will be my first and last thread, such I just game here to protect my pride - what mans like Finne1993 wants to take away.

    Sorry about my english...

Cracking choice of name mate!! Bit of a cheap shot to play the racism card though, its a handy way of trying to provoke a reaction or get sympathy but you won't get either from me.

I take all your points on board even though I don't agree with some of them, if you looked carefully enough I gave you a positive feedback, I knew i was buying something that may or may not work, it was more through curiousity than anything else that led me to buy it and I'm sure a lot more readers of this thread were thinking of purchasing it and all I was doing was informing them not to bother.

I never claimed not to know it did'nt come with a scart connection, all I said was there are boxes out there that can do exactly the same job as this one in the UK that has a scart connection for £20.

There was no warning of any description that it may not work in Ireland, maybe there is when you go to buy it now but without a doubt there was none when i purchased mine.

I never said Irish DTT was advertised to work on the box, I simply think with MPEG4 splashed over the sale page that a lot of people would've been misled into believing this was compatible for Irish DTT.

Lastly I could'nt care less that it did'nt work, as I said in my post I bought it for the hell of it, if it worked, fine, if not I was'nt going to lose any sleep over it.

Perhaps I was a little too scathing in my comments in the previous post and for that I apologise. As for your own comments and insults towards me I will not get drawn into a slandering match, you are entitled to your opinions, I will hold back mine as I enjoy posting on boards and don't want to risk a ban.

    Have a nice day :):)

To the mods: Apologies for the rant, we'll get back on topic now.
