I got the book for my birthday last week but haven't got down to reading it yet.

I'm surprised if Kevin said anything negative about Wexford........it's a nice course.

Bought my 2nd copy of the book today. Gave the other one to a South African friend of mine who had spoken at christmas time about getting a camper van and golfing about the place, keeping a video diary and blogging about it, if only our wives would work harder... he was gutted when I told him "too late mate" :D

If he needs a camper, send him my way...
]Kevin is it true from what i have been told you had a wright go at Wexford golf course in the press? Saying it was the worst course you played in Ireland and has absolutely nothing going for it.
Not sure if someone has decided to stir things up...
What I said (and I have the article beside me), was:
"If I don't like a course I say why I don't like it, I don't gloss over the cracks. An obvious example would be Wexford Golf Club. There are some lovely holes but it's an interesting combination that, for me, didn't work particularly well..."

That's the only mention of Wexford GC in the article. Yep, someone is definitely winding you up - are you a member there by any chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 622 ✭✭✭irishtoffee

Yep i sure am mate and thats why i wanted to hear from you.I was told you did an interview with the wexford people paper and was asked about the one course you did not like and the answer was wexford and in the article it said that you said it had nothing going for it. I have played a lot of courses in Ireland myself and found that statement to be ridiculous.Glad thats cleared up.

    Hiya Kevin,

I myself am a member of Wexford Golf Club and would be interested to hear your views as to WHY the combination of holes etc didnt work for you????

As you said the mention OF Wexford was very brief so would just be interesting to hear a sort of FULL opinion.

    Cheers,

    Meant to add this link

Mr Titleist, what I put in my review was that Wexford feels like too many people have been involved in making changes and they don't flow together cohesively. As a Wexford GC member you will agree or disagree, but the rhythm, layout and feel of the holes changes as you play.

I think a lot of clubs suffer from the same disease: every time a new committee or body or association or somebody who thinks they knows best comes along, they decide they have to change things or add something. A bunker here, a water feature there, a gnome on top of that... you get the idea. Wexford GC feels like that in places. I don't want to offend any Wexford members, but the water feature in front of the 5th green would be the most obvious example of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭Mr Titleist

Cheers for the reply Kevin and certainly no offence taken.

The layout changes for me everyday anyway as one day fairway the next trees...hahhahaa..

Just out of interst dont you like about the 5 th water feature?? That was Jeff Howes idea and not any committee as far as I know but I could be corrected.

    Thanks

It was all down to Howes the whole course.Kevin tell the truth you didn't like the water feature because you couldn't get over it in 2.

Ok, enough already. This is all off topic, if you want to discuss the merits of a particular course start a new thread.

Picked up 2 copies while I was down in Rathcore yesterday, as recommended by you. Read the whole book yesterday whilst watching the tennis, great first line Kevin, me too.

My friend can't drop his either, loves the maps and the nearby course as he's got a few weekends away booked.

    Well done again.

    Re: the maps...
It's nice to see the courses in an area but instead of reading a review and locating a course on the map I'd like to be able to look at the map and then identify the courses in that area to check out the reviews. Don't have the book to hand here so hopefully I'm remembering correctly but as far as I remember you can't tell what the courses are from the maps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,690 ✭✭✭Whyner

You can, each one in the map has a number and that number is on the top right hand on each course page.

I thought exactly the same thing. I could also be wrong but I don't think it's possible to identify the course on the map without having first seen the review page, if that makes sense. I thought it would have been better to put the page number on the map to identify the course. But maybe there's a good reason that wasn't done.

  • Subscribers Posts: 4,419 ✭✭✭PhilipMarlowe

Can you look at a map and identify what course it is or what page it's reviewed on? I remember if you read a review it will tell you what map and what grid etc. but the other way around?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭stockdam

I have most of the courses in Ireland on Google Earth. However I need to edit some of them as they aren't correct.

Maybe Kevin you could use Google Earth to show where the courses are?

If so then I may be persuaded to finish it off.

    Yes, Yes, Yes...

The course number is on each page and they're in order. Forget about page numbers and think course numbers

Glad you like the book, Whyner. I'm back at Rathcore on Wednesday. Can't wait.

As for the maps, Licksy, for the most part you're correct: I don't reference back the other way. If you look at the map and find the flag number you want, the best advice I can give you is to say that the numbers correspond very closely to the alphabetical course/page order - so if you look at the last number on the map reference of any review it will give you a good indication of where to turn, e.g if you're looking for no. 138 (Actual map ref is 4/A1/138) and you open the book on no. 130, you only have to go forward a few pages. It's not ideal, I know, but I couldn't identify another logistically suitable way to do it.

As for Google Earth - you do know I wProxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 born in the Stone Age. I've heard of it, I've seen it, but actually understand it...

I think your message is corrupted Kevin but I think you mean that you didn't understand my comments about Google Earth.

Basically I have a small file that if downloaded will open Google Earth and then show you all the courses in Ireland. So, if anyone reads your book and then wants to find their way to the course then they can see where it is in Google Earth.

Sorry I don't have my copy of your book in front of me and maybe what I'm saying is totally irrelevant.

I'd love to go back there asap, most enjoyable round I've had in a while although I couldn't get to grips with the greens, too fast and hard for me. I got the copies off Austin who was quick to mention you gave them 20 for golf experience...

I'm going out now to buy it if I can.
Do you have a favourite golf course Kevin in Dublin or one u would sent a new golfer onto not to be destroyed by hazards and bunkers:o

Glad to see it wasn't just me then. Still not sure why letting the map numbers correspond to page numbers wouldn't have worked. No big deal though.

New to this so forgive me. I was reading through this forum and it got me thinking. How many different courses have you all played from the 349 eighteen hole courses. As Kevin Markham has Ireland golfed out he wont count as it was organized no offense Kevin. So the question is who has the most courses played of the 349 eighteen hole courses?

there was a thread a few months back where we went through every course

    Cheers King,

What I was asking is how many courses have people played out of the 349 eighteen hole courses. I will do a search and see if I can find the forum\thread.

If you're a new golfer I'd suggest either Elm Green or Sillogue (Christy O'Connor) as the green fees are very good value - you should get out for 20 quid or less - and they happily accommodate beginners. They're in good condition and give you room to play. I'd try Elm Green first.
    Good luck

And where were you when my editor needed you. Seriously, we spent ages debating what to do with the flag numbers. And now it's so obvious.
Sorry that it doesn't work more easily.

Headfort New €30 to play, was thinking tomorrow, anyone played there recently, how is the course?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 281 ✭✭jimmystars

Played it the weekend and its a fantastic course in great condition. Would put it up with adare manor, pga national and fota. It is that good. Greens could be a bit faster but other than that top class.
