What do people mean exactly by progression? Does that just mean "changing"? If so, why is it such a necessity?

Because it shows that you have more than one good idea.

Fair enough, but I mean I've heard bands change for the better, bands change for the worse and I've seen bands just play the same type of stuff and still sound good.

I don't think you need to change out of your style, or "change" necessarily to still be a good band. You can stay within the confines of a style of music and still be good. Playing the same style doesn't have to mean repeating the same songs (although I accept that some bands are guilty of this.....whether Oasis are one of those is debatable I suppose)

    Very well said.
There seems to be a belief that bands have to keep changing their sound but why??
If you play a style of music and it's working, why change?

For me, if you've already done something, whats the point in doing it again? Why do something you know you can pull off? Whats the point in making new music if its not actually new music? And often enough, people that don't change are constantly trying to re-achieve something they did before, or trying hard to be their younger selves, this is where I put Oasis.

Firstly, I'm trying to draw a distinction between 1. Playing the same song with very similar melody to old stuff but just changing it slightly (which is a bad thing) and 2. Playing different songs but in the same style (which isn't necessarily a bad thing imo)

I really think that a good song is a good song is a good song.

I'll admit it often happens that bands have songs on one album in a particular sytle, then on the next album play weaker versions of the songs. That's disappointing, but that's just the way it is. I don't think that changing things drastically is guaranteed to make things better

It generally doesn't and in being such a difficult thing to do, shows us who has real talent and who has one good idea and a couple of minor variations. Change is the way forward, show you've learned something from what you've done, expand upon it and develop it, hopefully you end up better than you were. A lot bands, like in the case of Oasis in my opinion, don't seem to want to develop and get better, they're happy to keep writing variations of the one song.

But is that how you view music? As a talent show? Ok, there's nothing wrong with that. I mean, talent shows are entertaining and all

But to me, music isn't a talent show or a sport. I judge music by how much it makes good it makes me feel (through a whole range of emotions). If I like it then I like it- I don't care if it's a change of direction or if the band are even considered talented.

I don't care if a band is "maturing". I'm not their manager.

Take a band like the Dirty Three. I would consider 90% of their albums to have been very similar (Cinder being the only one that stands out from the rest for me). If you muddled up all their songs, I honestly couldn't tell you from which album/ era of their career they came from. But I still really like them, and have never gotten bored of them.

I don't want to give the wrong impression. I think bands that have changed their style have often done it for the better. Radiohead as an example, David Bowie being renowned for it. Nick Cave is another one. And I love all three of those artists, and I enjoy the variation.

BUT I don't think it's a necessity for all bands, and I don't think bands should be judged simply for not changing.

Well i'm glad oasis haven't changed dramatically. Why would a band change their music dramatically when they've worked so hard to gather a fanbase that like the music they make. And how can you say the latest ablum hasn't changed from the first two?
Change doesn't show who has talent. All 7 albums have gone to number 1 and they're one of the best live acts about.

But having the ability to write a song that affects someone is in itself a talent. The most important of all musical talents in fact. I despise flashy music, trust me. I just don't think Oasis deserve the attention they get, they haven't shown any inclination as a band to get better and that to me smacks of laziness.

With regards oasis i'd agree with you, but i'm not sure it's lazyness.
    Is noel still the songwriter??
I assume he his and considering he was at his songwriting peak over 10 years ago its really no surprise their recoeds since the 90's have been know where near as good as they where

Liam is the biggest, cockiest smelliest stupid person in the world of music. He is overrated and acts like royalty, all talk and no action and there is always someone who he will repeatedly badmouth.

Liam makes the rest of the cnuts look like saints, even though Noel is an idiot as well.
