As our current comes out at 240V and since he is not using a transformer then I should be fine to use this with a normal Oirish Kettle lead?

Yeah, 100V - 240V means it can take just about any input voltage. The lead used doesn't make any difference really, though having less adaptors is safer for the grounding.

I'm not actually sure how variable primary input works exactly. It either switches something depending on what voltage it senses coming in, or the regulation on the secondary side is cleverly designed to put out the same VDC no matter what comes in.
