I'm heading to New York next week and I'm just wondering are guitar pedals cheaper in average guitar shops on the street over there.
I know that online could prove cheaper but google-ing didn't really help me thanks :)

Its dirt cheap for the basic pedals, boss, digitech etc. Line 6 is pretty cheap. I got a DL4 a couple of years ago for 200 quid.

The big thing you should look at is the boutique stuff. Rare pedals that you wouldnt really see in europe, or if you did you wouldnt be able to try them in the shop. 30th street guitars has a ridiculous amount of wierd and wonderful pedals, and second hand gear.

There is a guitar center on 14th street near union square that is like a supermarket for guitars, you could spend a whole week in there...

Ive been to most of the music shops in manhattan anyway, so PM me if you have any questions on them..

    much appreciated :)

Yes i'd say they are a good bit cheaper, but as said, i'd be looking for something special. I was over in the states a few weeks ago and i bought a Fulltone OCD for about €100, where it was 200+ on ebay in Ireland. Have fun in New York!

Probably really basic advice, but if you buy a pedal with an adapter, don't use that adapter when you get home!

My friend bought a Digitech Whammy in the US, came home super-excited to play it with his own guitar and amp, and then wondered why there was no sound and a burning smell  And I had warned him...

    thanks for the advice.

What kinda pedal would you recommend?
I was thinking about getting a Wah Pedal of some sort
so would I be better getting one by itself or a Zoom with loads of effects?

    thanks

Whatever you do DO NOT buy AC to DC transformers there....even for 230v. You'll get whatever you need in Argos for about €12!

Also, if you're buying gear that runs on mains, make sure that it will run on 230volts without a separate step-down transformer! (Many items will now accept mains voltages in the 100-250v range).

The mecca for musicians in New York is probably West 48th. Sam Ash is at 155-160 or thereabouts, right next to Mannys Music. Have a look at these stores online. Allow yourself a day for browsing!!

Now the nasty bit. If perchance you're stopped by customs, you could end up paying 21.5% VAT AND additional duty on anything you import.

My experience is that you'll find anything you want just as cheap in Thomann or Musicstore....and if they havent got it, they'll get it for ya.

    Anyhow, have fun.

Don't just buy a pedal to have a pedal. Figure out what sound you want to get, and buy an appropriate pedal.

Do you listen to a lot of music with wah pedals in it? I know a few guys who got a wah pedal as a 'my first pedal' kind of thing, who barely ever use them. Don't throw money away unless you find something you really like.

I was looking at one that was shaped like a foot ( a foot design on it)
and it had a big distortion and wah on it
I have no idea what it was though
    any ideas?
I'd say I'd use the Wah most out of any
I'd also love to get a good loop

Like these ones? They're snarling dogs. Bottom one has a fuzz built in.
