Thanks for your reply, the password is 100% correct, checked on AP, tested and working from another laptop.

    Looking for more suggestions...
Remove the old wireless profiles (preferred networks below), move the laptop to a different place, reboot the computer and try again.

Tried that, moved NC10 to about 5 feet from the AP, still the same. accepts the WPA key and aquiring network address a few times before it gives up.

Have updated the drivers with the bundled samsung update tool too. Still no joy.

Do a google for winsockxpfix.exe and lspfix.exe -download and run them. Does this help? After this go to the 'Advanced' tab (next one over from wireless networks), double click on TCP/IP filtering- and make sure 'Permit all' is selected for all the options there. S.

Try powercycling your router for 30 seconds. If all else fails, connect up the Ethernet cable and reconfigure the wireless channel, name and WPA.

I tried powercycling the AP, changing the channel, SSID and the WPA key (to WEP, for the lol!). That didn't work.

So, I setup a test DSL router (with wireless) that was lying around, just to see if I could connect and get an IP from that, and lo and behold, it connected!

Happy enough now that the NC10 is not entirely at fault, (although I'm not convinced that the Atheros AR5007EG is the friendliest wireless chipset out there!), and that the AP is probably a little outdated.

Thanks for the help and pointers cpu-dude and smccarrick, greatly appreciated. *nods*

No problem. You didn't happen to have MAC filters setup on the other wireless router did you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,831 ✭✭✭Lucutus

The AP in question is used in the office for visitors etc. so no MAC filtering enabled.

Very strange indeed. I'm not a fan on the Atheros either, have a Dell 1390 in my parents house to collect soon, might dabble with OS X again then.

I'm also a not a fan of Atheros adaptors (after the hell I had with the configurator utility on one of the original Asus EEEPCs). I've swapped out the card with an Intel 5100 in my wife's NC10. I wasn't able to get a 5300 to work for some strange reason.

Did anyone try dual-booting XP with Ubuntu on the NC10? Much hassle? Worth it?

Disable Paging File- and XP will make use of the RAM instead of caching to the hard-drive. Performance difference will be very noticeable.

Sorry now for my ignorance, but can you expand on what you mean by this a little. thanks in advance.

Windows 2000, XP and later- have a preference for caching system files in page files on the hard-drive, even when sufficient RAM is present. Where large page files are present- it can significantly degrade performance. My own preference is to disable page filing at registry level.

Seriously though- don't go there- unless you know what you're doing- the potential to cause big problems isn't worth it.

You can set a maximum pagefile size via advanced system settings (of 200Mb or whatever)- and from the perspective of a normal user- it makes to do so- in light of the limitations in how Windows manages memory (if you do a proc call it may show bizarre amounts of memory usage- because it doesn't unload memory blocks, until another programme requests to use it).

I installed Windows 7 Beta on my NC10 and will be updating to the Release Candidate shortly. Works very well on it though I couldn't find the right drivers to get all the function buttons (brightness in particular) working, despite searching on a link provided earlier in this thread. Does anyone know where drivers that might help are available? Thanks

The drivers for Vista work with Win 7

Can anyone tell me the best place to buy one of these in pink in Dublin?

Have the cash and would prefer to get the cheapest deal (no shipping costs).

    Thanks!

The wifey has managed to pour a cup of coffee over her NC10. We held it upsidedown and cleaned it out as best we could- its booting as normal- but it seems that many of the keys are shorted. (It works fine on an external USB keyboard). What are the possibilities for getting a replacement keyboard- does anyone know?

    Cheers,

    Shane

I would wait a while longer before buying a replacement. I did the same to a wireless keyboard and after about a week it was working fully again. It's a case of waiting for all of the water to evaporate.

Plenty of replacement keyboards on offer on ebay or via HK/Chinese sites like http://www.battery-adapter.com/product_info.php/products_id/3449/vNC+10+Series

It was coffee rather than water- and the machine is giving continuous long bleeps when you turn it on- as though there are buttons being pressed continuously- so I think its the coffee/milk/sugar sediment thats causing the trouble- rather than the water (which has now had two days to evaporate). :( Quarryman- thanks for the ebay link- I've put an offer on one of them. I bought her a USB mouse and keyboard today- to get her back up and running again, not ideal- but its a stopgap measure.

    Thanks for the suggestions people.

I'm giving serious consideration to going for one of these to replace my ageing Inspiron 9300, can anyone tel me how it would compare speedwise?
The Inspiron is 4 years old now but has a 1.73 Ghz processor and 1gb of ram. I will use it mostly for surfing but will occasionally for work (light image editing and PDF distilling etc.)

I will miss the 1440x900 screen but what's the max resolution from the VGA output on the Samsung if I use a monitor at home? How is it for watching ripped DVDs (under 1gig, Divx etc.)?

    Cheers.

The laptop shop in the Stephen's Green shopping centre (top floor) can order you in one- normally it takes a couple of days. I'm not aware of having seen any on display anywhere (in pink) and I do get about a bit. Why does it have to be a bricks and mortar store- you'll get it cheaper online yourself. Ps- the petrol blue coloured one looks best- but of course everyone will have their own preference.

I got 2 of them for myself and the bro the other day in Power City. The "Online" price keeps changing, I got them for €353 each by ordering and paying online and going up to collect them the same day. So I saved us 54 Euro by doing it that way. In store they are €379.95 and todays online price is €359.05. I think Elara put their prices up to 379 in the last few days.

I'm looking for a carry case and I found this one on amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Notebook-Premium-Double-Memory/dp/B001LV7XAM . However it's not on the UK site, anyone know where I could get it in Europe? I'm sure I could get it from a US seller on ebay but the postage would probably be crazy. They are made in the US and I haven't been able to find anyone selling them in Europe, even from ebay. It's an ideal case for me because I don't want to keep taking the netbook out of a case, this one opens the netbook when you open the case and it has Memory foam like the stuff for matresses, so the netbook is held well in place.

What pagefile size if any should I use on the standard 1gb memory? And is it ok to partition the C: to 30gb? I'd only be using one OS on it and won't have loads of apps.

Works out at between $50 and $60 incl. of shipping from the US. Link to a whole load of them on ebay here There are loads of different colours/materials/variants available.

This ebay shop here seems to specialise in them.

Its XP- and you've a gig of RAM- I'd suggest disabling the pagefile altogether. Given you can allocate up to 256Mb for graphics (not that you'll see much on a 10" screen, even one as beautiful as the Samsung's screen)- I'd really suggest upping to 2Gb RAM- its a cheap upgrade and will provide noticeable performance enhancement.

You've probably found these already. Not the same as the one you found on Amazon either, but might be worth a look. Seems the seller ship worldwide, too.

EDIT: Sorry smccarrick, our posts crossed.
