    Hi, new to boards and just wanted to know did anyone have any recomendations for estate agents and other advice on buying a property on the costa del sol, specifically in nerja.

    As boards does not 'do' advice what follows is just some musings after some shiraz:

    1: in spain there is no CAT exemption for transfer of assets between spouses.

    2: The CAT thresholds are crappy low.

    3: If u can borrow money to buy the property and have a mortgage registered in Spain on the property, the CAT is on the excess of the OMV over the mortgage at date of CAT transfer: ie death of one spouse.

    4: Get a good lawyer first: there are loads of properties for sale down there with loads of scams/conmen/women etc so be ultra careful.

    5: Be careful who u chose to bank with, some of the x border fees are hugh for cheques/drafts

    6: make a Spanish will to ring fence ur spanish assets.
