Hey...I'm really interested in getting into engineering...but what is the best field to get in to? I'm not mad about civil, but does anyone have expereince in the courses in DCU? Are they good courses?

Courses are decent, no matter what you pick you'll be in a common first year, so you get to try out a bit of mechanical, electrical and software engineering and can then choose which to do, I'm in Mechatronic, I enjoy it but it is quiet hard, hope you enjoy maths :)

I'm in 2nd year electronic right now.

As podge said, it's a common first year, so no need to make a decision yet. Also, there is no civil engineering in DCU. There's 7 courses in total but they can be broadly categorised as 3 electronic (electronic, digital media and information and communications engineering), 3 mechanical (mechanical and manufacturing, bio medical, manufacturing with business engineering) and mechatronic which is mixed electronic and mechanical.

yep, the courses in DCU are good and the common first year is nice because it's hard to know what type you'd like to do in advance. If you have any more specific questions just say so ;)

Did Medical mechanical (now biomed) which I thought was good. I would go with whatever interests you the most. First year will help you narrow it down. One great point about DCU over others is that work experience is included in the course. DCU finds the placements. I did mine in automotive in Germany. It looks great on your resume and more often than not gives you a leg up on others.

In the mechanical stream (med/mechanical) you cover some less traditional subjects, focused on computer aided technologies (simulation etc) where some other courses do not touch on...

Also is pretty well recognized, I am working in the US now. Any questions just let me know.

    Hey guys,

Thanks so much for getting back to me! The common entry sounds like a great idea! Did you find it was a clear choice for you at the end of your first year?

Thanks Cadence for starting this thread! I was looking for something of this sort!
I'm in sixth year at the moment trying to decide between Trinity, DCU and UCD and I'm completely stumped. I really want to go to DCU but i keep being told to "follow the points". Can anyone tell me how the DCU course ranks up against the others?
And is it any more difficult to get a job with a DCU degree as opposed to one with the name Trinity on it?

As I said, i would prefer to go to DCU as after the open day, it seemed a much friendlier, more up to date college but right now we have to look at it from an employers perspective!
Any feedback from people doing/finished DCU engineering courses or anyone with any sort of information on the subject would be appreciated!

I believe that (in mech at least) DCU does some coursework that is no so traditional when compared to TCD or UCD. I had to make the same decision and I do not regret it 2 years after graduating. We worked in FEA and CFD, which are computer simulation techniques coming to the forefront in engineering. A BIG plus for DCU when I was choosing was INTRA. DCU find you a placement in industry, I believe UL are the only other ones doing this for all courses (Some may have it here and there). I did mine in automotive in Germany, and got offered to go back (Although I am in the US in a different field now). I like the course it seemed more to date, and industrially relevant .This has been recognized by my colleagues here in the US (I asked them to review the masters in DCU I am doing) who are from the big engineering schools(UMASS amherst, RPI, WPI etc). I have done well from this course but it is what you make of it.

One thing I will say, is the people at DCU made it for me. The guys and girls I met there are some of my best friends and will continue to be... DCU has a great attitude and employers in Ireland go back to recruit there for that reason. The next four years will be painful (as engineering is tough) but the people along the way suffering in the labs with you make the difference. That is my two cents...

Thanks a million man. Great to have some quick feedback like that. From going to all of the open days, DCU was without a doubt the most appealing to me but it's great to hear some feedback from someone who has been there and done it all. Thanks again!

I don't do engineering but I'm quite sure that "follow the points" is a load of tosh, do what you want to do.

getting a job with a DCU degree will be no different to with a Trinity/UCD one, what is much more important is how you do in the degree and what other aptitudes you can bring to the job.

All in All if DCU is what you want, than go for it, its a great college.

I did Mechatronics in DCU and I must say, I totally agree with KenHy, points don't count for anything.

The Intra placement is a great opportunity to get yourself a possible job on graduation.

I know several companies that employed people from my class. They were very happy with them and went on to employ more DCU engineers.
