    They are looking for the type of variable that will be returned from the function/method. e.g. char, bool, int, double, float etc. :)

    Well, you're supposed to fill in the return type (if there is one) for each of those methods - i.e. where the "..." are. Variable "z" is just a piece of data the code has access to, doesn't affect things much otherwise.

    You need to look at each method and figure out what type of data the code will return, if any, or if it won't work at all (at least one of those methods would throw a compiler error in C#, likewise in Java I'm pretty sure).
