Am finishing up college in a matter of days and am going to start work on a children's novel I've been thinking about writing for years. I want to work hard at it, does anyone have any guidlines on what is a realistic wordcount to aim for per day? I know not everyone uses wordcounts, but they help keep me focused.

I only dabble in writing myself but I would think if you could manage to write 400 to 500 words a day that you were really happy with you'd be doing well.. Quality over quantity basically..

I'd recommend somewhere between 500 and 2000. But more important is that you actually do it every day (or, say, every weekday) - even it's 250 words a day, that adds up, whereas 5000 words on the occasional day will tend to add up to less.

I'd aim for 2 hours or 1000 words, whichever comes first.

Do it every day, even the days when you know you are writing crap. You never know, when you go back later to edit it, you may find something in it that's worth saving. And making yourself write even when you are not inspired often produces unexpected twists in your plot.
