Apart from the engines bursting into flames. 2 of them were flying to england for an airshow and had to divert to iceland because of engine problems, one of them had to have an engine completely replaced. Another had serious engine issues while on display maneouvre's in Italy and one that was sent for front line testing in Iraq also suffered engine failure on it's first operational flight.

Even as a child, Andy_g had a passion for aviation. While his friends were scutting on the back of the local bread man's van, Andy would hang out on runway 28........

that osprey is f1@L! its had more crashes than pretty much any other aircraft, during its prototype phase a pilto died trying to take off in it. the only thing cool about the osprey is same fisher used it. :D

The amount of time and money thats been spent on the project is scandalous, and they haven't even got a working variant yet. America's military R&D motto should be "America, flogging dead horses with the best of them" :D

To be fair at least the osprey entered service unlike the Comanche. http://www.janes.com/defence/land_forces/news/jdw/jdw040223_2_n.shtml
    And on a lighter note

Think you're bein a bit hard on the osprey. Granted did havee a lot of development problems but its a completely unique aircraft. Once fully operational, it will revoltionisenaval aviation. All of sudden one aircraft can perform the duties of many. It can do search and rescue, anti-sub, anti shipping and much more.

Seriously, you guys need to start playing harpoon ;)

I disagree, there's an old saying "jack of all trades and master of none". When you try and build something that can do everything it usually ends up being able to do nothing (at least not particularly well).

Planes are planes and helicopters are helicopters. Each has its strengths and its own roles to perform and when ye try an make one catch all craft you always fail.........hard.:p

Well i'd never say amercian carriers are only gonna start just carrying ospreys, but the aircraft is far more versatile than any helicopter. There would no longer be a need to carry 3 or 4 different types of helicopters to do different jobs. The osprrey could do them all. And carry some harpoons for whenthe going gets rough.:D

Sounding like a bit of sales man here.

I get what you're saying, the point i was makin was that one aircraft tryin to do 3 different jobs would never be able to do them as well as three aircraft specifically designed for each job. A fighter bomber will never match a fighters maneouvreability nor be able to carry near as much ordnance as a dedicated bomber.

I guess its all about personal preference. I personally think it's worth the slightly higher cost of having to field more task oriented aircraft than fewer all purpose ones. Just my opinion :)

ok i wont say it didnt have problems but all aircraft do and its handy it can do multiple roles but i have i have to say they could of designed another helicopter to do it since the v22 is a whirley bird and not fixed wing because it has two big rotor on it and technically the wings are only being classed as pylons

Agree with Harlequin on this. I like the idea of ospreys and all that, but they're never gonna really succeed.

What they should spend that budget on is a more effecient power source for conventional helo's. The more effecient the engine the further and faster they can go without loosing agility. That said, the day of the helicopter is coming to an end for military purposes. No matter what you do they will always be very vulnerable. Observation can be done by satilite and if you need to strike a point you simply dial the co-ordinates into a smart bomb on UAV and hit go. They will still play a role in logistics for a while, but soon enough some clever millitary researcher will design a plane that can land on any paved road(without burning a third of its fuel :p) and take off again without a giant catapult.

On another note: 24 finale, bit of a let down in my eyes, though ye 24 detractors will say that was always to be expected:rolleyes:

not really true you could slap a really big fast engine for example into any type of aircraft its turning radius is greatly widened=less manouverability that being said if you look at the formula for lift its the same for whirleybirds and fixed wing for you guys that dont know it here it is L = (1/2) d v2 s CL
L = Lift, which must equal the airplane's weight in pounds
d = density of the air. This will change due to altitude.
v = velocity of an aircraft expressed in feet per second
s = the wing area of an aircraft in square feet
CL = Coefficient of lift , which is determined by the type of airfoil and angle of attack.

took me ages to find my file on this havent taught the coefficient of lift lesson in a longtime
