I find him a bit annoying, albeit skirting, I think it started with his reviews of the World Cup in France. The constant metaphors in French alienated me in a way that had not been matched since Joyce's Ulysses.

Probably the best rugby journalist in Europe.
Informed beyond belief, very nuetral and is honest in his articles.

Compare him to the English ****e like Jones and Butler we are very lucky to have him.

I think your just jealous of Gerry's earing, designer stubble and overall coolness.

You obviously dont know anything about Gerry Thornley

Think he is one of the best rugby journos out there.

Always enjoy reading his articles and listening to his views on the TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭Hippo

Readable, unbiased, seems pretty well-informed. And as was pointed out above, miles ahead of most of the idiots to be found typing on the subject across the Irish Sea. All in all, pretty good really. Who is better?

He's a journalist. He'd be mad to turn down a job writing about tennis just because he prefers rugby.

He is a such a sexy beast that the content of his articles is irrelevant.

    i remember his articles back in '95 & 96,
when you compare him to that guy David Kelly in the Indo there's a huge gulf in standards. In fairness to tony Ward he knows what he's talking about, Brendan Fanning is very good also.
Donal Lenihan is dreadfully biased whenever he's involved.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,423 ✭✭✭chupacabra

I respect Thornleys opinion more than any other rugby journalist around, simple as that.

He's so cool he can make ridiculous statements about players and pissing ice cubes. Fact.

His husky voice, no doubt the product of a 20 a day Marlboro Light habit, provides the perfect compliment to his descriptions of the Irish team's breathtaking moves.

When reading Tuesday with Thornley, it is as if you can hear him speaking directly.

He was one of the few journalists not to pussy foot around EOS during his spell and to call him up on his conservative nature.

He writes for the best paper.

He is a champion, pure champion.

Gerry is the best writer around by a mile at the moment.

Do not like Tony Ward at all, he gives off the impression he has a massive chip on his shoulder.

True i have Irish match programmes at home with ads for the Times in there with a slogan like 'From Ballymena to Blackrock....Thornley is there' sort of thing complete with a picture of the slick man himself.

I read Thornley cos he's the lead rugby writer in the only Irish paper I buy. From what I've heard of Tony Ward on TV, and Dave Kelly on TV & radio, I wouldn't be pushed to buy the paper they write for. Stuart Barnes is OK, once you get past his understandable pro-England & ZP bias.

    Stephen Jones ? At least he's consistent ;) !

One thing that annoys me about Thornley is his fondness for using coach jargon and player nicknames. Maybe he's trying to suggest that he is high on the speed-dial of key players and coaches.

He's also overly fond of the phrase 'psychic energy'. In fairness, he nearly always credits the phrase's origin with Murray Mexted, but it is as if he is on commission to use it as much as possible. Gets on my wick

Thornley is definitely one of the top rugby journalists in Ireland and the UK. Has that knack of not appearing to show any bias when criticising or praising teams and their opponents and invariably makes me think of things in a different light. I know that there are some on here who don't like Butler but he is another one who makes me appreciate points of the game I hadn't considered after reading his articles

Journalists start out doing whatever they can to earn a buck, he clearly loves rugby, is totally immersed in it and is universally liked by his colleagues and the players that I know which is something that's fairly difficult to achieve. Compare that to Tom Humphries who just wants to write about GAA and just whinges when he has to do anything else.
I think Peter O'Reilly in Sunday Times is a good rugby writer as well.

That guy should have a lol in commas after his name. His articles are so poor and cringey that they make Roy Curtis look good. He also has a Desperate Dan jawline going on.
As for Gerry Thornley, he's a class act. He is exceptionally well informed and I always enjoy his contributions across print, radio & TV.

Thornley is quality, it's great to get to a pub early on the day of a match, read his column with a pint before you meet your mates.
Tony Ward is terrible. Anyone hear Denis Hickie ripping into George Hook on the right hook? They should give him a job on the RTE panel instead of Conor O'Shea

I have a lot of time for Butler too actually. Though he's not a patch on Thornley.
