    Can we expect investigatory journalism?

Seriously, the lack of critical content, which should rightly have been directed at NUI admin was shameful.

This is very important. Much as I love to know what the John Paul Society have been doing to raise a few quid, I think some serious chances were missed this year in terms of The Spoke. Between the canteen workers, Hughes actually getting a wage increase and the massive cutbacks across departments there was plenty for the journalistic yoof. I think the paper should actively seek writers early in the year, even send out an e-mail for the first issue.

I met Broni in the course of the campaign. Seemed to know his stuff about layout/presentation.

    My hopes are high.

I cant understand how they were satisfied with closing off input like that - if anything it adds more work.

Not to push it too much, but again, DCU put out open calls for editors two months ago. 16 positions for section editors and deputy editors (for specific sections, I cant remember the names exactly - lifestyle, politics etc...) - that didn't include contributing writers.

Not having a dedicated journalism degree in Maynooth is no excuse, there are plenty of capable writers across all disciplines. Personally, I dont believe student papers, which have done amazing things in other colleges in terms of political engagement and critical scrutiny, should be tied into Students unions in any way.

It angers me to see how positive and invigorating real journalism can be for a student body, especially in the context of the past year.

Its the only way to go.
A front page layout that stays more or less the same all year, a solid top banner, an image-box that doesn't move and a tagline/digest on the bottom. You've more 'real content' on that one page than in an entire issue of this years Spoke. The glossy magazine look doesn't work, back to newspaper format. There's nothing graphically amazing about any of that paper above either, in fact its far less complex than what they tried to do with the front of The Spoke a few times this year.

The University Observer is an excellent publication.

I'm sick of the sheen effect magazine format spoke - Never mind how bad it reads; it looks, feels, smells* and tastes** rotten.

I spend most of my time back and forth between Dublin Uni libraries, and whatever campus I'm on, I love seeking out the latest student newspaper just to see - who's getting a rap over pay increases, what departments are cutting funding, what dealings went on in the boardroom over private research contracts on college facilites, who is stepping in to run the bar facilities, what curious think pieces are doing the rounds.

After getting over the sensory offences of picking up a spoke, I dont give a steaming s**te about fight like apes, or an editorial written like a four year olds 'our news'.

Sorry for the rant, but it starts to make you reflect on the quality of your own teaching output
