Hey everyone, weird question i know but im slightly paranoid about something a girl said to me last week in a nightclub, basically i was having a bit of banter with a girl who was pretty drunk in the smoking area of the club, and she made a comment to me that i never heard before - "do you have a lisp??". My instant reaction was of slight shock as i was never actually aware that i did speak with a lisp or not, then she asked me to pronounce 'sausage sandwich' in front of her and i struggled to actually say it (maybe out of nerves)....anyway over the past week ive naturally become very self concious of the way im pronouncing my 's's' etc and was wondering if its actually possible to develop a lisp, ie as a 25 year old male? I have never been aware of anyone even mentioning to me about this subject before and of course now im really paranoid :(

I've never heard of anyone just developing one. If you do have one it mustn't be very noticeable if you're only aware of it now. Chances are it shows more when you're drunk. My niece had one but after a few appointments with a speech therapist it's gone now.

Maybe you were slurring slightly if you were drinking? Maybe she didn't hear you correctly if she was drunk?
If I was put on the spot after someone said that to me I'd probably stutter or lisp too.

I've never heard of anyone developing a lisp later in life. Maybe you're overly conscious of how you speak since she's mentioned it and you're lisping as a result. I wouldn't worry. If no one has ever mentioned it to you in the last 25 years I'd say you don't have one or you have an ever so slight one.

    op here...cheers for the replies

just another twist to the plot, i dont drink so that can't be blamed, but you're probably right and im just being overly paranoid about it, however you could add this as another piece of evidence for the 'why do guys not approach?' thread :D

I'm 20 and people only started commenting/I started to notice a lisp in the last 6-9 months... I blame everything from tongue stud to braces etc etc but I dunno, I find when I'm thinking about it I really can't say my 's's but when I'm not I don't notice it...I think maybe you can develop a lisp... The same way you develop one when you're a child...

Also, ask your parents or siblings or someone who's known you most of your life if they've ever noticed it. If they haven't then it was probably a one time/word thing.

I've one word ('specific') that I can't say without lisping even though I don't generally have a lisp. Perhaps you've got just one word too!

Could be a case of getting lazy with your articulation.

I have a lisp always had but it becomes worse when someone mentions it!
Its as much a mental thing as anything else, sometimes actualy most of the time its barely noticable but becomes noticable if i think about it??

I never had a lisp until I got a filling in my front tooth & now I cant say some words with "s" in them!
