So.. Who on here is on the Board?? :P

Well, I know TSM generally elects eight scholars (did in 08, 07 and 06, at least) and given the numbers this year, should elect at least that many this year.

Twenty-three TSM students (according to the list) got full exemptions. Therefore a TSM student's odds are most likely 8/23 - 34.8%.

And yes, I know stats are absolutely no use in this. But they keep me busy while I wait. :)

Sorry, mine was meant to be thirty per cent. Em, if that 320 is only those who sat, I go to more like 55%. I just didn't want to be there and not get schols if it was 83 getting it, and 10 or so not...

Nobody keeps track of that stuff. I wouldn't worry mate.

If you're talking about the announcment on Trinity Monday, then there will be loads of people there - a lot who will get schols and a lot who won't, and a fair proportion of won't even have taken the exams (I tended to go every year for example). You also get some very confused tourists wondering what's going on.

    aw.. not fair...:(

What does a call mean tho... Can you take it that you got it?

AFAIK BESS scholars get a call the friday before Trinity Monday, essentially telling them it'd be a good idea to show up on the day.

Anyone in BESS, TSM Eonomics and Business is called on the Thursday before Trinity Monday to inform thet would be 'in their interest to be in front square'. Theoretically it can mean you won a prize for being the 'best non-scholar' but in reality it means Scruttocks is living the life from here on in. Shame about his looks though.:P

Supposedly this applies in Law also but I can't vouch for that.

Thinking about this, I doesn't make sense that some departments tell their students early. It should be all or none. And too, if those departments that tell their students are ones who expect to get at least one scholar each year(I'm guessing that BESS and Law would consistently get at least one scholar) rather than those who rarely get them. The courses that JC and I take overlap for ~half of the exams, and there have been only 3 or 4 scholars between them since 04. Logically, shouldn't we be the ones to told?

There is no reason anyone should be told, anymore than you should ever get your exam results early. Its not an official policy in any department to tell people, but lecturers know who got schols and they are, after all, real people and so some feel its fairer to give students a heads up while some don't.

Anyway, I would think the announcement would be less memorable if you already knew.

I'd like to know beforehand, so I could get to grips with the result on my own, rather than be ungracious in any way on Monday.

I'm somewhat miffed that I didn't think to ask the Provost whether I got schols when I introduced myself to him last night.

Out of interest, what order are the new scholars read out? Alphabetically, or by course, or some other way?

By department (in alphabetical order of departments from Biblical and Theological Studies to TSM) and within department, by surname.

Ah bollox. Not a single person ever seems to know what department, or even faculty, I'm in.

Its read out by course title rather than department I believe.

I heard it was reverse alphabetical order...

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 29,707 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

Person or course? Anyway, its neither unless they've changed it (trust me I know, bloody TP is one of the last ones to be called out!)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,794 ✭✭✭JC 2K3

    Course.

I heard it was long and drawn out, that the fellows were anounced first, followed by the scholars, with a lot of applause after each name, and that CS was one of the last ones to be called out, as it was done in reverse alphabetical order by course.

Then I looked at the schedule and it's only 30 mins long, so I suspect I may have been given false information....

I'd imagine this to be representative of the order:

Wonder if they have the article for tomorrow already on the servers...

Last time it went by course in forward alphabetical order, and within each course, by surname a-z. It'll be the same again this year. Just a note for scientists, your course title in this case is "Science" not "Natural Science". I thought the official title was natural science, so freaked out a little when they went from M to O :p.
