    Indeed .

I grew up in Ireland listening to Irish folk / CW ,British and american pop / rock music ,with a bit of European popular classics thrown in .I appreciate that we live in a world were diversity of taste and freedom of choice is everywere in every field of entertainment, be it music , cinema , literature and sport .

Why isnt nottingham forest supported in such numbers here hmmmm....they are pretty successful!!

Like soccer would be at some sort of descent level here if people would just get behind it a bit more...remember before the premiership and sky english soccer wasnt all that great to watch....so dont be at that "oh Loi is s**t" excuse because it doesnt wash!! English soccer teams were very well supported over here at that time!

I am interested in the premiership but cant for the life of me support a team, used to support tottenham when i was younger but then realised supporting them wasnt the same as the emotions i went through watching ireland or mayo in gaelic football!!
I had no connection to the club!!

Wait, I thought that this skating thing might be a bit lame until I read the tagline from IMDB on the above film, 'prayer of the rollerboys'
In the 21st Century, it's gonna take one man and his blades to save the world from another man...and HIS blades.

    WOW, sounds AMAZING!!!!

they werent really. 2 european cups and a single top flight league title. their european accomplishments over a few years years make it seem like they were a more successful team than they were

Because most are at home transfixed on Sky Channel 4 hundred and something, moaning that the local team is ****e, or over the Irish sea kissing the ass of the latest league winners.

Irish rugby provences do a pretty good job, as do every GAA county team playing in the championship.

There are 2 fine examples of putting the energy into your own country.

But hang on, you said should support Irish culture and not be off supporting foreign sports. Are Rugby and soccer not 'British' or at least foreign? With the argument you're running with we should only support irish sports ... gaelic and hurling. **** I shouldnt be using this laptop... its not irish made...

The world is a smaller place these days, unless you wanna return to protectionism and feudalism I think you'll have to get over it. Maybe if Sinn Fein get into power they can help you...

the only inline skating you watch is irish then? you dont watch any foreign skaters doing tricks, or taking part in competitions?

as said above, you support a massively un-irish sport, and you have the gall to come in and slag people for watching english football? good man

Oh dear <sigh> As I've said before, I will admire any person or team who excels in their field - sports, academia etc.

    Let's take your skating analogy:

If the Cork Inline Skating team were competing against the Manchester United Inline Skating team, I would have no right to support either as I'm not from either place, but I'd probably hope that Cork would win as they are the same countrymen as myself. On the other hand I may feel that Manchester United skating team deserved to win as they were the better team.

I would not support either team for the rest of my life because they win championships, leagues etc.

Can I make it any clearer?

no no its perfectly clear. because of some misguided patriotism, probably bred into you when you were reared, you believe that it is somehow a sleight to your irishness to have a favourite of anything that isnt irish

    thats your problem, not ours

Bloody foreigners, stealing our football fans!

If you're going to follow an English sport you might as well support an English team.

People would, and do kill for what you have - a country and culture of your own. I don't mean you have to be playing the oileann pipes with your irish wolf hound while drinking Guiness (an English product) Create your own culture. Educate yourself, be independent.

    In your opening post....

OK so I can support an Irish team playing an english sport thats OK. But speaking english not irish isnt?

No, I have alot of favourites not Irish, eg. I prefer Erdingher German beer to Bass.

No super nationalism in my house growing up. I formed these view points myself as a grown adult. I'll never wear a Man Utd, Liverpool, Celtic, London Irish, Juventas jersey when I have no right to do so.

Anyway, as alot of people here have said, it's a personal choice, and that's just my opinion. Go ahead and worship those teams that give you that winning pleasure - It still seems pathetic to me.

people support teams that dont constantly win things you know

same way people in ireland support teams who DO win things for the sake of being successful (stand up munster fans, where were you 15 years ago?)

So how is this different to not supporting GUinness, Harp or Beamish cos they're Irish brands?

It is very useful to be fluent in English - It's the international language. It is very practical for international commmunication, but at least use your own language to some degree.

I was asked recently by Austrians why don't the Irish speak Irish? - that's another thread...

Sorry I'm not very good at multi-tasking ill stick to one. There is no need for Irish why would I speak it?

Seeing as the offical language of Austria is German I can't see how they have much of an argument.

Yet again I will explain - I don't SUPPORT Erdingher beer, I appreciate it as it subjectively better tasting to me. If I taste a nicer beer I will drink it.

I don't buy and sleep in Erdingher quilt covers, watch Erdingher TV channels or get depressed because other beers won beer awards over the weekend.

Then if Liverpool play better football why cant you appreciate them.If the football is better i will watch it simple as!

First of all **** nationaism, but LMAO at some of the barstoolers here.

some clown on this forum once said that 'foreign owners don't care about football fans here' this is what we are dealing with in this country, people with an identity crisis.

football is about the local fanbase going to matches with pride every week, not arsing around in some pub with a liverpool jersey with gerrard on the back, its absolutely pathetic. i cringe everytime i walk into a pub and see these idiots thinking they are devout followers.

LISTEn people you are consumers not proper fans, you are fools, support the league of ireland and irish clubs, not because they are irish but because this is what football is about.

do i live in ireland? i don't think so. maby on the landmass but it is the most cultureless country ever, where is the language gone? look at all our papers, look at the sheep buying crap papers like the sun. most of the population are more english than the english themselves.

i really despise most of the english league worshippers because they are irelands shame.

Well I'll re-iterate the argument I said I prefer 'foreign' soccer because the quality is better same as you preferring erdinger fair enough, but it invalidates your main foreign club supporters are losers.

Ok so you don't sleep in a beer bed cover, unlike these Irish supporters who throw "millions" at these English football teams...

But do you not exchange money to get these said pints of erdinger or do they give you them for free? Therefore 'supporting' that fine beer-making establishment?

Whats the difference I'm at a bit confused...

i think if the op had of presented his arguement better he could have made some sense but my god did it go of topic!i was once asked who i supported,i reply with the eircom league team i support to which the person who asked me the question in the first place goes "no,your real team, like united or liverpool"...i kinda just laughed that he could not understand that i support an irish team...im not saying everyone has to support an irish team, support whoever you like, just dont think everyone who supports the domestic game is like the first poster!!
