Yes, I have contributed money to several worthy causes/objectives. My local league sports teams, GOAL, St Vincent De Paul, Medecins Sans Frontier (foreign) - these are what I regularly contribute to.

Wow, this guys like a cross between Chucullain and Jesus or something.

If you're asking if I've spent money on imports - of course I have. Because I have a requirement for goods and services not produced here.

And others (clearly not you, but each to their own) have a requirement to seek entertainment from watching and supporting sports. Im sure the majority of people here would support their local teams if they faced Man Utd, Chelsea etc etc. Its about enjoyment and people enjoy football/rugby or whatever sport you wannatalk about at a higher level because that is where the real entertainment lies

I'm Irish, and I think soccer is a great game. What makes me sick is my country men have no culture or pride of their own and declare loyality to foreign winning teams. It is absolutely pathetic.

All I hear is Finn Harps, Shamrock Rovers, etc - "they're sh1te, etc"
It does not matter that they are not very successful - they need local support. You can admire and commend great skill in other players, teams, and countries, but you only have the right to support your local/national team.

These weak loyalist supporters are usually low/middle social class Irish who support these winning teams, mostly in English and Scottish premier league (also other sports such as Ferrari in F1). It seems to me they do this to enjoy the success of winning a game, likely to compensate for failures in their own lives.

Grown men in British football jersies who spend 3-4 hours a day watching and reading about completely irrelevant actitivies. (I'm not anti-British BTW.)

    Celtic, Man Utd, etc. Pathetic.

Are you from these cities? - No.
Do you know any of the players personally? - No.
Can you speak your own native language - No.

These fools are sedated by 900 channels of Sky TV, Coronation Street, the "Oirish" Sun and Carlsberg (coz Jack tells them to drink it).

People would, and do kill for what you have - a country and culture of your own. I don't mean you have to be playing the oileann pipes with your irish wolf hound while drinking Guiness (an English product) Create your own culture. Educate yourself, be independent.

You have NO right to support these teams. Get a life - your own life.

I just feel if this energy was put into our own country instead of abroad, it would be great.

These British teams must be laughing at the Irish - pouring 100s millions of Euros into their clubs - embarressing.

so you dont like non irish bands, movies, novelists, playwrights, foods or art? because lets face it, you have no right to like them, after you only have the right to like irish things

    pathetic

im irish because i was born here. the fact that i was born here doesnt dictate my taste in anything

You know what, I like sport. Whether it's Irish or Japanese or British, I will gladly sit down and watch any sport (except cricket or baseball or any stick sport) because I'm a sports fan. If there's nothing on and there's a LOI game on, I'll watch that. I won't know who the hell anyone is but I find sport the most entertaining thing in the world, apart from my gf ofc. ;) If they were on our TV, I'd watch the NBA/NFL every day because I like those 2 sports the most. I'll also go stand on Hill 16 (Dublin only btw :pac:) during the summer for the championship to support the boys in the blue and will always watch Ireland in any sport (even cricket). It takes no energy whatsoever to do any of these things so while I see part of your point, don't start jumping to conclusions about why people do what they do and keep your trolling to 4chan.

do you have a requirement out of necessity, or simply because youd like something that isnt available, home made, on irish shores?

There are not one irish team that can fill a stadium in ireland so I guess your calling a majority of the country losers.

Because most are at home transfixed on Sky Channel 4 hundred and something, moaning that the local team is ****e, or over the Irish sea kissing the ass of the latest league winners.

Irish rugby provences do a pretty good job, as do every GAA county team playing in the championship.

There are 2 fine examples of putting the energy into your own country.

Ill probably get slated for this but why do people think that man united and liverpool are the most supported teams in the country..........maybe because they are 2 of the most successful teams in england??
As far as i can see irish people in general love nothing, and i mean nothing more than a winning team and that is why both are so well supported over here! Look at rugby especially at provincial level over the past 15 years, back in the early to mid nineties do you think that youd get 80,000 to so watch a munster vs leinster game!!! Not a chance!!! Irish people are bandwagon jumpers!!! All of a sudden rugby is the cool sport now, this isnt a bad think as both teams are irish, just an example how quick people in this country get behind a team thats considered both glamorous and successful ( loads of people in connaught wear jerseys and support munster instead of their own province) ,this is why we get people supporting the english soccer teams.
Another factor is irish people love hype and generally buy into it, sky tells them every premiership match is brilliant, and sadly they believe it!!

Excellent, although probably sarcastic, it's a start! Now don't adorn those Liverpool/Utd/Celtic jerseys after the training

Is this a joke? OP you need a reality check. I choose not to bother with Irish soccer because well frankly IMO it's nowhere nearly as good as the English league. I've also been to EL games and witnessed fights and thugery. Any PL game I've seen has had none.

This support your local club crap is pointless and in no way valid. Do you eat only irish food?

What? People need to read the initial posts. Part taking in a sport and SUPPORTING a team is very different.
If I only lived with items of pure Irish origin I'd be extremely limited.

The counter arguments on this thread are idiotic. I'm getting bored explaining myself.

the only inline skating you watch is irish then? you dont watch any foreign skaters doing tricks, or taking part in competitions?

as said above, you support a massively un-irish sport, and you have the gall to come in and slag people for watching english football? good man

Because you're increasing the cultural influence of a foreign game over an Irish one. Disgraceful behaviour for any patriotic Irishman.

    Pathetic, as you might say.

How am I foolish? I bring that into it to display the nations laziness and lack of discipline/pride for something that is unique and priceless to a nation, the lack of pride/discipline that results in supporting these teams that they have absolutely no link to.

You won't find Israelis calling their Hewbew language useless like the Britannia soccer worshiper here.

Pride? Ask any European what makes them proud to be German / French / Spanish, I doubt any of them would mention their language.

Hewbew? That is a completely invalid comparison. Hebrew is mainly use by jews today as it is a large part, if not fundamental part in their religion.

If there is any reason we have lost our culture, if we ever had a decent culture, is globalism. American and British shops have taken over. But is this a bad thing, some may say it has led to the death of corner shops yada yada yada.... I say it has done nothing but improved our standard of living.

THe reason I believe the League of Ireland has failed is not the lack of a fan base but the gross mismanagement by the FAI, admittly the fact that most would prefer the premier league hasn't helped. But if I watch football I want to be entertained not lulled to boredom. I can only find football like this in the premier league of other european leagues. I support Juventus and Arsenal not because they are winning sides but that I like the football they play. I am a fan of exciting football not necessarily a foreign team.
