Not sure if im putting this in the right place.. but here goes..
Couple months ago booked a week holiday to malaga at the start of june. Really been looking forward to it as just been having an awful time recently between health problems and loads of other stuff.. anyway my parents decided last night that i would be very stupid and selfish if i go on the holiday because of this whole swine flu situation! Their exact words were 'you would probably survive it if you got it but if you brought it back and gave it to us we would probably die' (!!)
Now i dont know what i should do because 1)ive paid alot of money for this and would not get it back if i didnt go and 2)what are the chances of catching it anyway? Plus ive been so looking forward to the break and just to get away. Nothing seems to be going right..
Anyone got any advice on what i should do?

    That's awfully nice indeed...

There's still a month, sit tight and observe. If the flu becomes a realistic danger, cancel, if it's just isolated cases go.

That's a bit horrible of them to say!
No wonder you want a break, is it very nonrefundable/transferrable given the outbreak?
You could wait and see how this develops, is the swine flu in Malaga yet?

    hahah that's a joke.

You might catch AIDS as well. Be careful.

JCos please read the charter of this forum with regard to unhelpful posts.

Fair enough. Is there strictly no humour allowed in this forum or what?

Go on your holiday and enjoy every minute.

Theres more of a chance catching flu here with this goddam rain and blackness all the time.

Stroll along the seafront in Benalmadena and Torremolinos and gulp in that beautiful Mediterranean air - do you the world of good.

Do you live with your parents? You could have your holiday and then "quarantine" yourself when you get back, say for another week ... purely for their protection of course ;)

Just keep an eye on the WHO site and keep looking forward to your holiday as normal!!

Excellent idea. Get your parents to pay for a quarantine week in France if they are so concerned about their safety!

OMG go on the holiday! Tens of thousands of people die every year from the average flu. This is no different except its new. Go and enjoy yourself. Your parents are just being selfish and no offense meant...a bit stupid and childish

Dont mind them, them calling YOU selfish and stupid is a tad hypocritical no?

Go on the holiday and tell your parents to turn off Sky news and go for a walk!

They are quite wrong, its actually attacking younger healthy people so its you who will probably die if you got a bad strain. It will be here by then anyway so I wouldn't put too much thought into this.

    PLEASE go on your holiday!!
How many people have died of the swine flu? 10? There are more people dying of the normal flu all the time, and nobody stops travelling. And you're not going to Mexico, you're going to Spain, so you should be fine :)

Sky News has a lot to answer for. It's in Dublin now anyway so not really an issue anymore.

Your parents are just scared still unfair what they said to you  I hope you have a ball sounds like you need the break ;)

Seems like if swine flu wasn't around they'd be telling you that it was selfish to spend that money on a holiday because of the resession.

    Go and enjoy yourself!
Bring them a little piggy with a sombrero when you get back!

I agree with this. Well I've heard now that they're saying it is more likely to kill young people than older people. Explain this to them. Show them the information being given out on the swine flu, and try to reason with them. The quarantine idea one writer wrote isn't so bad... if you don't live at home anyway. Tell them you'll use sprays and all sorts.

Go away on holiday and enjoy! Tell your parents to stop reading the tabloids. I think they're only making the situation out to be worse than it is. I know thousands have gotten the swine flu in Mexico and some have died from it. But Mexico is a very poor country. Many people there can't effort medicine for it. And the health care they have over there is sub-standard. I doubt the swine flu will have the same effect on this part of the world has it had over there.
Remember what happened with the bird flu scare a few years ago? The media were scaremongering, saying the bird flu was coming over here and that "thousands's will die" and other nonsense and nothing happened in the end. I think this will be a similar situation.

Drogheda has 1 confirmed case of Swine Flu. Dublin has a second case which hasn't been confirmed (yet). Malaga has none.

As per the above- the Swine Flu is no more virulent than H5N3 or any of the other variants which were in circulation here last season- and the flu season is pretty much over too. Flu (of all variants) will once again become an issue come October/November- but to suggest putting your holiday to Malaga on hold, to minimise the possibility of contracting Swine Flu is misguided to be honest. You are about as likely to catch it there as you are in a pub or restraurant in Dublin.........

Your folks are being hysterical to be honest. For gods sake, cancelling a trip because a few hundred people world wide have been infected. That's ridiculous,

    To put it into context:

No of deaths from Swine flu in US: 1
No of deaths in '08 from normal Flu in US: 40,000

Go on the holiday and enjoy every last second. I am heading to California in 2 weeks time and the whole flu thing would never put me off for a second even though there are 6 confirmed cases in the county i will be visiting.
The flu outside Mexico is a lot weaker and is not being passed as readily from human to human.
40,000 people die from infulenza every year in the US, the chance of catching swine flu is about the same chance you have as crossing the road and being knocked down. If you were unlucky to catch it (lets face it you would have to be incredibly unlucky to catch it in spain) the treatment is very effective here in Europe.
