yet another reminder that it is essential to add defensively in summer and learn how to close a game off. If we can do that and keep the rest of the players things look fairly good....course it's never that simple.
Come on - we all know (and playa3 said it), that's not how it works. You can't just change one part of the jigsaw and not affect the other parts at all.

We've defended very well at times over the last couple of seasons when our first-choice backline is concentrating and playing well and the rest of the team is performing well in terms of retaining possession, etc. Nights like tonight the entire team broke down and it takes more than buying Nemanja Vidic to sort that out.

Missed the first part of the first half tonight so I missed the line up. Didnt even know Denilsion was playing until he got taken off for Walcott. He needs to go out on Loan IMO. Nowhere good enough for the first XI. Song did OK actually, looked busy. But we were steam rolled in the middle. TBH its not cesc's job to be the ball winner. He needs a partner. If I were wenger id look into bringing back Flamini. He wouldnt cost that much and he isnt getting much game time in Italy.

Sagna looked like he was still sick. Hopefully that performance was a once off. A CB is the THE most important position we need to look at in the summer. We need a defender who can actually defend.

Sneaky bid for carvalho? He is out of favour at the mo and is a world class defender. Plus I would be surprised if Gallas is with us next season.

And what can you say about Arshavin. WOW!! 15 million looks a bargain right now!
Provided he stays fit and maintains any level of form then he will be a MASSIVE player for us next season.
I would **** that man, withdraw, and cum on his back.

Wait, did I just take the superlatives too far

Taken from a United forum which I agree with!!:D

At least we can finally put to rest the Arshavin naysayers.
Must kinda suck to score four and not come out on the winning side.

Right what did we learn tonight?

    1. Arshavin is quality

    2. Arsenal cannot defend to save their lives and crumble under any kind of pressure.

Neither bode well for the champions league. Still, cracking game & the unbeaten run continues. Pity it handed United the title, it feels dirty.

i wouldnt think the title is over yet. Sure united will be encouraged but we have to play them yet, tottenham play them this weekend, man city wont present any walkover at this stage of the season. i think also if middlesborough are fighting for their life they are capable of beating them at the riverside not to mention Wigan causing an upset at the JJB. i totally agree with you on the point of our defense. In the golden wenger years we had adams, keown/campbell, then later toure/campbell as well as an in form senderos but we are now thin on the ground when toure, gallas or both are out. for one djourou is the louis saha of centre halves and is a liability at the club and silvestre's legs are gone. to be fair he is originally a full back. for me phil jagielka is the best centre half around at the moment. what a snip he was at 4 million and could play in goal prob better then fabianski :D

Its a pity the defense rained on Arshavins and Songs parade, Song was amazing, Arshavin i can't come up with the words.

Hopefully Almunia back for next week (apparently not in time for Boro at the weekend though).

Should definitely help steady the ship a bit at the back.

Yes how much is your pride and self respect these days, that traitor has made he's bed and can get fcuked up the ar*e by Gattuso & co in it now

While yes I agree Almunia has been fantastic of late anyone that thinks Fabianski was culpable last night needs a new telly or a new pass time, the problems were all in front of him, Sagna was clearly not 100%, Silvestre was well Silvestre, and Toure is not the same player when Gallas is missing and infact IMO none of the back four are,

Fabianski did well. Possibly a little disappointed with the goal that he got a hand to but overall much improved.

I feel that Almunia has more experience and might help to organise the defence a little better.

Did anyone else feel that Andy Gray was been very harsh/dissmissive of Fab, a couple of he's saves in the first half were very good and Andy 'take a bow son' Gray just sort of dismissed them as ''Saves you'd be expected to make'', Did Andy loose a few bob on Chelsea at the weekend or what?

    Agree completely.

As for Andy Gray, I thought he was pretty much on the money most of the time - most of 'Pool's first half efforts were straight at him. I though he dismissed the save from the Torres near post half-volley a bit too easily but otherwise, he was unusually fair.

What really got me was the Liverpool-focussed discussion - I didn't mind it beforehand, given their guest for the evening, but how I'll never know how Smudger didn't brain Jamie Redknapp and Richard Keyes for banging on about Liverpool gifting Arsenal 3 goals without mentioning that we gifted them 3 as well.

Thought Nasri put in a hard nights work last night, always looking for a pass and got stuck into challenges. top player

The last time we were leaking goals like this, Wenger went out and got Viera and Petit.

    fingers crossed :D

Song's come on in leaps and bounds and Djourou looks OK but I'll be very disappointed if we don't start next year with a new quality DMF and Defender.

In Arshavin, it seems that Wenger has finished building either the best or second best attack on the planet.

A team with RVP, Ade, Eduardo, Arshavin, Nasri, Walcott, Fabregas and Rosicky has everything needed to trouble any defence, could change seamlessly between 4-4-2 and the CL favoured 4-5-1 and could also withstand a reasonable amount of injuries. However it'll all be for nothing unless we go out and buy a stronger spine.

So please Arsne, a DMF and a defender.

And Bendtner. Also, I presume you mean 'squad' - not sure a team with all 8 of them in it would give that defensive improvement you want :)

Its a disgrace to even see Bendtner even be mentioned with the rest of them players.

Hang your head in shame Moe!

Yeah thought Nasri had a good game alright. Himself, Arshavin and perhaps Fabianski aside, nobody had a good game really.

He's been better this season than Rosicky :p

Oh yeah, Song was decent enough.

Was thinking last night if I were a manager playing against Arsenal and Wenger employed his tactic of bringing on Walcott, I'd bring on a fresh left back at the same time.

He doesn't even have to beat players, he just kicks it past them and runs faster than them.

Very potent weapon to have on the bench.

in 2006 Theo Walcott became the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year taking over from Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, an English Sprint athlete. Theo took over the reigns having a personal best 100M sprint time within half a second of Harry's.

By 14 he was doing 100m in 11.7sec. There aint too many left-back subs that can match that pace, or even get anywhere near it. You'd need to keep your fastest player on the bench just in case so he'd be fresh when Theo gets a run.

Well...Plan B was to kick him very very hard. :pac:

Its great to see in Arshavin we finally have that goalscoring midfielder we've been lacking since Bobby and Freddie left.
Hopefully next year he can do a Ronaldo for us and score 30+ goals in a season.
    Who needs strikers?

Youth team currently 2-0 up(4-1 agg.) against man city in the FA youth cup semi. Watt in the first minute and Wilshere with a penalty after 20

3-0 up now. Bartley scored the third from a corner.

Arsenal - Liverpool youth cup final by the looks of it.

Mildly interesting statistic from the Telegraph's stats page - chances created in this season's CL:

    1 Andrey Arshavin Arsenal 38
    2 Xavi Hernández Barcelona 22
    3 Frank Lampard Chelsea 21
4 Wayne Rooney Manchester United 20
    5 Lionel Messi Barcelona 19

Shavva's had rather fewer games I would have thought...

    he played 6.

Messi 9, Rooney 10, Fat Frank 6, Xavi 10. Some acheivement really, twice as much as Messi the supposed worlds best player. I may have to withdraw my initial skepticism about the guy...
