Stolen Sonic Youth Mustang turns up

Ten years ago Sonic Youth had a truck with ALL their gear in it stolen (SY use tons of odd tunings, so they had a lot of guitars between them), and one of them just turned up on eBay a few days ago! It sold dirt-cheap, somewhere around $600, I guess the seller knew and wanted to get rid of it ASAP.

A guy on Offset Guitars unknowingly bought it and then figured it out.

    Back in the day:

That thread's a pretty interesting read if you have the time. The guy lives in The Netherlands, he's on the guest list for a SY show in Dusseldorf, where he'll return the guitar to Lee Ranaldo. SY said they'll pay him back with a bit extra for his troubles, pretty cool guys.

+1 Glad to hear he's gettin' it back. :)
It would really suck to have a guitar stolen, thankfully it's never happened to me.

    Good story.

    Unlike this one

which the buyer then decided to sell on shortly afterwards

Yer man posted ads offering $200 to get it back after he realised the value, saying his roomate was going to murder him etc but, unfortunately, they've been removed :pac:

pity they swapped out the pups though

not on the same scale (SY were cleaned out)
but j mascis had all his 60's jazzmasters nicked a few years ago
i almost shed a tear for him!

    +1 Creamy, it's ****ing gorgeous!!

This was Lee's favourite Mustang, apparently. It's the one he always played Eric's Trip on, so it's a pretty big deal to the band.

Not the best routing work ever, though:

    :P

I think the guitar kinda lost some of it's coolness when it was restored to original electronics (well, I think those black pickups are actually Seymour Duncan replacements), though it looks a ton better now, imho.

Hmmm, I can just see the Fender marketing spin on the Ranaldo Signature Mustang....
" Featuring our patented 'Tone Chambered' body that really brings out that vintage Mustang tone, a must have for all serious Sonic Youth fans out there...":pac:

LOL - and I was thinking more in a Gibsonesque weight relief vain...

Whatever it takes to get it to do what you want it to

So he obviously routed out the neck for a humbucker, anyone fancy suggesting explanations for the routing under the vibrato?

It's not as bad as the job I did on my old strat. I "routed" out space for a bridge humbucker with a screwdriver. :o :pac:
